A text message is 160 characters max in length, but when I send one with an emoji, my phone shortens the text message to 70 characters maximum. Why is that?

Emojis use two bytes each. Regular characters use just one.

But modern phones shouldn't be limited to just 140 characters anyway.

So on a modern iphone or android or blackberry if you type over 140 characters, does the recipient receive multiple text messages or do they just receive one text message condensed together? I think I receive multiple when I get a long text.

I have an older phone and yes when a get sent a really long text it gets broken into multiple messages. Really want to get a smart phone but I'm just too cheap to upgrade till I have to!
