Originally, it was a part of the "Women We Love" issue that was released in November to build interest, the magazine would do a tease, releasing images of the woman's body parts in the issues preceding the November issue. By 2007, it has become the dominating story of the issue and to create an element of surprise the hints were abandoned. In 2004 Esquire began giving the winners the cover with the first winner being Angelina Jolie in 2004.

Man, almost every thread about a woman's looks always has people stating "not that hot", and then you always have people responding to that being all "WTF, you couldn't get her anyway." People... you have to keep in mind that when critiquing a woman with a generic title of "sexiest", you have to consider all women (that you know of). So, if I say that Emilia Clark isn't the sexiest, I may be saying that because I can name a few women off the top of my head that I think are more attractive. That doesn't mean that I'm saying she's some ugly CHUD.
