I modified my microwave oven so that it may run while the door is open. Temporarily neglecting to recall this feature, I opened the door while it was activated (attempting to stop it).
I got a "tingling" feeling in my face, also hypersalivation.

I know that some EM waves in use have been known to cause cancer or brain damage.

How would an AFDB (or a full body steel enclosure) actually benefit one?
How would life be improved if we were not pelted by the thousands of radio stations every day?
 
scary, small amounts wouldn't have hurt u really, but your eyes are more sensitive to that stuff, not good idea.
 
The danger to the human body from microwave radiation is primarily the heating of body parts that have poor circulation and thus poor cooling such as the eyes and the testicles. The military has done a number of studies in this area and has produced some hazard charts for various pieces of equipment. One fire control radar I worked on had 10Kw. x-band radiation in a 0.9deg. beam. According to the chart you could be in the beam 3 seconds of every thirty second period as long as you were at least 1100 ft. away. We could make fluorescent lights in houses glow whether they were turned on or not from miles away. Great fun in a foreign port with the superstitious locals.
 
a microwave send out specific waves at a frequency that excited (and thus heats) water. the danger is not from cancer (maybe very long term small amounts...), but from having your insides cooked if you stand too long. just a couple seconds is not gonna hurt anything, as it is just warming you a little... not cooking you, yet.

LOL @ that site... the waves that cause cancer are usually those that do damage (gamma, alpha, x-ray, beta, and some others as i don't know that many). although, any radiation in large doses can cause problems especially over long term.

a tin helmet or full body enclosure probably wouldn't help that much or at least one u could still move in. i do not think am/fm range radiation even penetrates our skin, so i doubt they are very dangerous.
 
I would stay away from the microwave owen with the door open. As has already been mentioned it is dangerous, especially for your eyes since the microwave will pass trough the "soft" part and simply cook the cells in the back of the eye, making you

blind.

Actually it is the opposite. long waves such as AM/FM will just go straight through you body, the high frequencis (a few GHz)will be absorbed IN the body and very high frequencies (hundreds of GHz) will be absorbed in your skin.

It is related to the so-called skin-depth which is roughly inversionaly proportional to the frequency.
 
f95, thanks for correcting me... i'm not a physics major or anything, but if am/fm waves go through you (without doing damage..), why do the shorter wavelength waves like gamma and x-ray do far more damage?
 
Basically because the radiation contains more energy. The energy is proportional to the frequency (the formula is E=h*f, h beeing Plank's constant).
Short wavelength radiation contains so much energy that it can destroy chemical bonds in molecules. If the DNA-molecule in one of your cells absorbs some of the radiation it can destroy a bond which destroys the information encoded in the DNA, if you are unlucky it might destroy some important information. This can either just kill the cell or in the worst case cause cancer.
This is the simplest sceanario. I know there are other mechanisms but this is reason enough to stay away from even small doses of high-frequency radiation. Note that this mechanism does not work for frequecies of the order of a few GHz since the energy of that radiation is too low, in this case the danger is simply normal heating (like in a microwave owen).

Yes! Also, the resonant frequency of water (which comprises most of our bodies) is exactly that of the microwave frequency (or so I've been told).
