Emergency : Monitor burnt 4 times !

Situation : Straight to the point, i bought this monitor : Likom L305X 15" monitor a year ago. last month, it burnt, i send it for warranty, come back, burnt again! warranty again, burnt......for 4 times consecutively.

Details : the 1st & 4th times burnt with smoke and strong soldering kind of smell, u guys will understand it i guess, with both operating less than 15minutes before got burnt.
The 2nd and 3rd time is a bit different, they burnt in a strange pattern, the monitor just like being short and show no display with NO smell or smoke whatsoever, just lie dead.
Both died in 30 minutes and 2 hours respectively.

Solution : I dunno, i'm kinda loss here, the monitor is considered a lousy 1 compared to Samsung, Targa and Hyundai. And I don't want a 5th time burnt this time!!!!!! The technician says he change some ICs and got no idea how it got burnt.

I really need some advise as I'm about to change the extension cord and change the wall output plug. I'm afraid something else could be the factor, Reply QUICK!!!!

Don't know what to tell you other than see if you can get your money back, see if you can get a better brand named monitor, someone who can back up their equipment.... someone who is legitametly surprised if the monitor Burns out. 4 times with the same model monitor? that's rediculous... I would have 86'd them after the 2nd time it burnt... and with the time span you mentioned 15 minutes before it burnt? You said you had a surge protector, so it's not the wall plug... it's obvious it's the monitor and not anything you've done...

I would raise HELL with them, that's crazy. They should have given you a new monitor the second time, no excuses. Threaten to "bad mouth their products until the day you die"...LOL, I've found those to be pretty powerful words with reputable companies. For extra ammo, I would measure the voltage coming out of the wall socket to demonstate it is within specifications. It's obvious that monitor is non-repairable, it MUST be replaced with a new one.

Good Luck! 😀

OK, I know I should've added this on earlier but I forgot!
After the 3rd time, I insisted that to test the monitor 24 hours on at the repair center & 'according' to them, it's no problemo and another 8 hours at the shop before I arrived to pick it up

So, basically, what could actually cause the monitor to burn here? I plan 2 change all the cable and extension cord but do they really contribute to anything?

I have heard of this before. (can vaguely remember the situation though ) I think when he had this problem, it was due to the refresh rate he had his vid card set at. This may or may (prolly not) not be the problem. Something to look into anyway.

Good luck

A few ideas:

a) Replace the power cord.. yes, I realize it sounds odd, but I've seen some weird things,

b) What kind of voltage suppressor is this? Some generic thing from K-Mart or something like a Tripp-Lite/APC/Liebert surge protector?

c) Put a line-conditioner or UPS(with that capability) on the outlet and track the incoming voltages with PowerChute or some other similar software. Even if you replace the outlet, your power provider could be supplying "dirty" power to your home.

Networkman has some good points/ideas. The reason I flew off the handle is I've experienced a similar problem with a Scept_e monitor. This monitor was in a well controlled lab environment with several PC's and I was absolutely 100% sure the problem was not ours.

sparrow18: hey! i think Likom is the same as Futura, which is the brand of the monitor i am using right now. my first one died all of the sudden as well. there wasn't any burning smell, so i guessed it was a blown fuse. my replacement came and turned out the pins of the monitor cable were bent. right now i am using the third one from them. it was one of the cheapest 17" monitor i could find, with a 16" vis.

keeping my fingers crossed all the time, but it has been like 3 months and it is still working fine. i guess this should have taught us to get our monitors of more respectable brands! 😛

networkman :I C, well, I'm using a voltage regulator with the brand AVR, quite popular here in malaysia. This is one of the biggest frustration in my life!!!

wuming :Yes! Futura is one of the Likom Series and I'm using it too, & yes! try getting a better monitor in terms of brand the next time you get a new comp, Likom is definately out of the buy-list!
