here is the situation - win2k adv serv w/ sp3. i installed some software, everything worked okay. i went to update my virus definitions and the update froze. in fact it froze the computer, the mouse would not respond, ctrl, alt del would not work. i had to hit the reset key. when windows started back up i got the bsod, stating something about ntkernel.exe was in the wrong spot. i tried to put the hdd in a win2kpro computer as a slave to get my data back. win2kpro sees my hdd and its 2 partitions, but when i click on either one of the partitions, i get the "D:\ is not accessible. Access is denied" and also the same with the "E:\" drive. it was very late last night when this happend, and i reinstalled win2kadv serv over the previous version, i sholdn't have done this but i was extremely frustrated and tired. again, when the new install booted up, i get the same error, cant access the drive partitions. PLEASE HELP!!!!!😕

as a matter of fact, i do normally back up but just put a bunch of pictures on the computer from a digital camera that mean a lot to me. i have been messinag around with getdataback and i can view the pics. i will get it all back. 🙂

Uh....you didn't have those drives encrypted, did you?

No, it looks like he is able to get some of the files back with that "getdataback" software. It looks interresting, and since Ill have the chance to practice some hard drive forensics I might have to pay for it :Q

Boot to the W2K CD and do an upgrade in place.

Even if it totally overwrites your OS and you have to reinstall apps, your data will be there.

If the only goal is to recover the data, slip the drive into another W2K machine, assign it a drive letter, and read files from it.

You didnt read the original post did you?

You're right. I didn't.

Right-click the drive, select properties, give yourself permission to the root of the drive.

Looks like you removed everyone/read access from the root of the drive, and the SIDs of the new machine aren't in the ACLs on the drive from the old machine.
