It's a two car garage door, wood. The cables appear to be fine. And unless you have superhuman strength, that door is not going to be lifted solo. I'm going to wait for a neighbor or two to get home and then we'll lift it so I can back my car out.

weak...how much can it possibly weigh? It's on tracks and all...I bet I could do it.

Tell you what, ITG*. Come by and lift the door solo, allowing me to back out my car. If you succeed at doing this, I will pay you double your costs for getting here for showing me the power that is you.

You might rabbit...you might. Those big ole doors (especially the 14 foot wide ones) are much heavier and ackward to lift than you would think.

It's actually 16 feet wide, by 7 feet tall.

I grew up doing manual labor... I used to carry around 100lb bags of cement when I was like 14. I've built on to houes, reroofed houses, laid cement, dug trenches, put up a fence, built a shed, built a poolhouse, moved I don't know how many tons (literally) of dirt in wheelbarrows.....

Not saying I'm the strongest guy in the world....I just don't think it should be too hard if you release the auto opener.

Even so....a few tools and it's easily done by yourself.

Give me two jacks and some big pieces of wood and I'll have it up in no time. Maybe one good length of pipe.

Well, have you actually lifted one? I have (with the help of the garage door repairman), and I can tell you it's a bitch! Once you get it above the 2nd panel or so, it goes much better. Also, don't let that bastard go once you get it off the floor...makes a terrible bang and screws up the door even more!

Two jacks and piece of wood? That's entirely different than lifting it by yourself, as you implied above.

Not one as wide as the OP's.

How so? I never said I wouldn't use tools to accomplish my goal.

Implying that the OP is weak and then suggest using tools? LOL!

Especially weak if it can't be accomplished with tools...that's why we invented tools. Even weak minded if one can't think of a solution to a problem such as this if only one person is available to do the work.

This is why we have pulleys and such...less force required to lift heavy objects.

When ours broke it was a b1tch to get up....what was even more scarry though was closing it.....the SOB built up speed on the way down.....

And you are weak minded if you think that the OP and everyone else has all of these tools and elaborate pulley systems laying around to open a garage door that is broken. Maybe he can't get out to purhcase the jacks or pulleys as his car is stuck in the garage? To suggest that someone is weak because the door isn't open (yet) is an assinine assumption on your part.

Just need a few common items... Didn't say anything about needing pulleys.

Maybe everyone also doesn't have a couple of jacks sitting around? Everyone is Mr. Handyman.

Pulleys were mentioned later..never said I required those.

I think I read the whole topic, but saw no mention of pulling it apart. Take it down one section at a time. It's an hour's worth of work with a ratcheting socket, and 20 minutes worth of work if you have a power tool drive the socket.

Careful with that spring!

Problem resolved for the time being. When my neighbor came home we just gave it a lift and I backed my car out. Carefully lowered the door again, where it will remain until next week when the installers come out and do their thing. Thanks for all the help, boys and girls.
