I've been trying to get a USB scanner to work on my new KT7-Raid computer. It has not been working, so I logged onto the internet to search for an answer.

When trying to disconnect from the net, my system became unstable because of the scanner. I had to re-boot the computer. When I re-booted, Windows would not fire up. It gave me this message:

While initiating device: VCOMM.
Windows Protection Error.
Need to re-start computer.

I don't know how to fix this. Does anybody out there? HELP!!!!

HI,

What have you tried to do to fix it? Have you tried safe mode? Have you tried the boot menu and having it ask you before running each thing during startup?

Have you disconnected the scanner?

Can you still get in to the hard drive to edit/replace files?

I did a search on my HD and found VCOMM called in a LOT (208) of files. It doesn't seem to exist on its own, so I suspect it is part of Kernel32.dll or some other system dll.

Perhaps re-installing windows over your existing system will fix it?

Any chance it was just a coincidence and you are actually having a hardware problem? I.e. You're overclocking too far, or your RAM is giving you a hard time?

I'm headed to bed, so hopefully something above will give you something to work with.

Good luck.

Thanks for the info Atroz. I've been searching the MS Knowledgebase. It looks as though VCOMM is created from Unimdm.vxd and Unimdm.tsp.

Both those files appear to be in the correct places with the correct sizes and dates, so I am thinking it must be a registry error.

I'm going to look now at how I can fix that problem. Stupidly, I didn't back up the registry once I got the PC going.

Help!

Now that more people are awake, have any of you had an experience like this? When I get home, I'm going to attempt to restore the previous version of my registry. I didn't use any utilities, but Win98SE saves the last good registry dosen't it?

I'm also going to try "scanreg /fix." Has anyone had success with this?

Thanks,
