So this lady calls in and says she is called from Mississauga and her driver is broke down in Ottowa. Well, since I don't do a lot of work in Canada, I really didn't know where she was talking about so I asked her where Ottowa is... what province, etc.

The lady was like "You don't know where Ottowa is? It's the nations capitol. It is in Ontario." Then she was very short with me for the rest of call. Crazy Canuck!
I'm sorry. Some of us think that Canada is such a great & important country that everyone should know every detail about this country. However, most Canadian are extremely ignorant regarding Central/South America, Africa & South/East Asia just like American lack of knowledge regarding Canadian geography. IMHO, it is not that important to know everything about every country, but it is important to know where/how to get the information if needed.

I'm from the Wet Coast or Left Coast as the snobbish Easterner call it...we & most people on this planet do not care about the mosquitoes infested hole that call Mississauga :p

And, don't worry too much, because many Canadian don't know where Victoria is. They don't even know that it is locate on Vancouver Island, and well below the 49 parallel...and to make matter worst some don't even know what the 49 parallel mean for Canadian/American. 2 weeks ago subscribed to London Telecom long distant phone plan & the sales person asked me where I?m from so she could check her database to see if they cover my area. She laughs & said to me that she doesn?t know where Victoria is when I told her that they must cover my area (the capital of BC province), because they advertise that the coverage is over 100 major cities. And, I told her that it is below the 49 parallel on Vancouver Island. I asked her where she is from & she told me that she is from Saint John, which is in PEI (most eastern part of Canada).

Did I miss something? She said she was from Saint John (which is in New Brunswick, not PEI) and that PEI is the most eastern?

If you're going to break out of this mold of historical geographical incompetence I'd advise you to pick up an atlas and, once you've mastered your own country's states (since most Americans haven't done even that), move northwards and learn Canada's provinces and capitals. Then, for mexico, you have mexico, mexico city, and slums :D

We have 31 states.... but your brain is still too small to assimilate them....

You are worse than the ones you critizice.....

I win so much money when I bet that "Mexico is a state." "I didn't say one of the United States... pay up"

From Canadian Bacon (John Candy movie) after the mountie explains that they took Honey to the capital:
Boomer: The capital Toronto.
Mountie: No, the capital of Canada is Ottawa.
Boomer: Yeah, right. Do we look that stupid? Ottawa!
Roy Boy: Nice try, Dudley.

hey now, we can't help it there is so many more fun things to do in America than memorize states and capitals.....besides 'technically' we are all born as superior, what do we need to prove to a canuch anyway. Just let Rush move here and they can then cut the power to that waste of real estate no other nation wants ;)

heheheh

Wow sir, that is quite impressive coming from this board.... :Q

You are right, we have a state called México (Estado de México)

It gets confusing even for the locals, as you have México as country, México as city and México as state.... You made my day, so have a  on me..... :)

By the way, that is my state.......

When those news were read here, I didn't know if I should cry, laugh or pray..... Last place is not nice, even if you are against some of the most developed countries in the world, that have far more money to spend in education....

The good: We almost catch up the USA... ;)
The bad: Their scores were also embarrasing, so for the joy..... :(
The ugly: Even the winner, Sweden, couldn't brag that the scores were impressive..... but none the least, they were the best.
The other: Canada was a nice surprise, as they saved face for the continent.

Standard and expected response. Instead of admitting that Americans can't find crap on a map you condemn other's knowledge by insulting them for it.:p

I'm not insulting them :) I admit Americans can't find much on a map because insignificant places cry about it all the time. Indians, Chinese, etc. can't find anything on a map either. Some of them told me that Peru was in Europe. But, I'm not going to criticize them about it. Seriously, having pride in your knowledge of geography is retarded. You are no longer 3rd graders. Have pride in something more adult like mathematics, engineering, sciences, etc. Having a huge knowledge of geography doesn't do anything. Having a huge knowledge of a useful subject can help the world. This is just my opinion.

Next time they'll be bragging about how they know the entire alphabet song :)

I'm not so certain this is a statement you can make. While reading the OP's story, I quickly identified where Mississagua was even before getting to the Ottawa part. I can also list all of the Provinces (and Territories I suppose) as well as, I think, all of the capitals. Beyond that, I can list the US States and capitals. I've been an American all of my life. I decided to test some of my g/f's friends (she is a Canadian) and they couldn't tell me where Washington was. In fact, they weren't able to correctly place most of the states except Michigan.

edit: I just realized that my post is rather embarassing following CanOWorms' post. Incidentally, I do know my alphabet.

Sour grapes anyone? ;)

OK, so science is more important? Sorry, Americans can't do that either. I can't remember the survey but there was a basic science news story posted less than a year ago on CNN that covered basic scientific questions like the scientific principle and some other things like that and they scored very poorly as a whole. I can't say if any other nation would have done better, but it's quite a stretch saying that americans forgo geography to learn more relevant things. And I can think of far more uses of geography than calculus for the lay person, so if you're saying the average american can do their multiplication tables well then congratulations!

Obviously Canadians don't have good reading comprehension because I didn't say that Americans drop geography for sciences nor did I say that they're far superior in that field. :D

I know what survey you're talking about. You actually believe those surveys? I don't believe them at all. If someone came up to me with such retarded questions, I would answer them falsely. It's kind of like those TV shows where they go around asking people questions - it's so obvious that people are lying just to act funny on TV.

I think other nations would do better. Not everything in the world is a linear relationship. I personally believe that first-world countries with small populations like Canda, Scandinavian countries, etc. can educate a large % of their population whereas a country of 300 million won't have the same percentage of educated people. However, a country of 300 million will obviously have MORE educated people.

Again, it's my opinion. I hope you don't have a hard time reading this. :)

Ok, condemn us for our lack of geographical knowledge on Canada. Yes, we don't know where Ottawa is. I have no intention of ever going to Ottawa. I've lived within 6 hours of Canada all my life (now I'm even closer than ever, just 4 hours away), and the only inclination I'd ever had to go was so I could drink in bars before I turned 21. The only time I've ever been to Canada was for a scavenger hunt. You talk of relaventness...well, it works both ways. :)

You shouldn't feel bad about not knowing much about a specific area of Canada. Now if you didn't know where France, Germany, etc. are, then you would be a sad and pathetic individual. Personally, I know where and what the provinces of Canada are, but I really wouldn't care if my neighbor didn't. It's nice if you're Canadian and if you know most of the American states, but that doesn't really mean much to me. Simply put, the US is a lot more important to Canadians than Canada is to Americans. News here in the US is also news in Canada. Our policies would have at least some sort of impact on Canada. The same probably couldn't be said about Canadian news/policy in the US to the same degree.

If Bush sneezes, everyone in the world hears about it. If there's a crisis in CA, then Canadians will definitely hear about it. I don't think the same could be said about news from Canada being heard anywhere else.

This isn't some sort of Canada bashing post - it's just my perception of how things are. I'm sure that most people in Poland know where the US is - but half of the people in the US probably couldn't even point it out on a map. Why? Becuase the US is always in the news and Poland isn't.

Canada seems irrelevant until you realize it's one of the greatest nuclear powers. And until you realize that Hydro Quebec powers most of the east coast, both Canadian and American.
I don't expect everyone to know all the provinces and capitals of my country, because I don't know all the states and capitals of yours.
Yes, I can name all the states in the USA, and can easily place half of them. The rest I can figure out by process of elimination. I could also tell you from your ZIP code which state you're in. Most people couldn't do that. I don't however know the states and capitals of most other countries.
My brother on the other hand is a travel agent. His job is to know these things. And he makes good money too.
However, just because you don't HAVE to know something doesn't mean it's not useful or interesting to know.
Funny story though, I live in Montreal. For those who don't know, that's about an hour north of the New York/Canada border. This lady from New Jersey called the store I work at this summer, and she was asking us about the weather. She was asking us how much snow we had :(
My boss joked around a bit and told her it was pretty warm and our igloo was melting. She didn't get it :(

Yeah, me too and I've been out of school for 40+ years.
