Uhg... I'm a dispatcher (phone guy) for a company and basically I take all the information for huge trucking companies when a driver breaks down and needs help on the road. 99% of the work is in the United States, and the other 1% is Canadian. Let me tell ya, I was embarrassed today.

So this lady calls in and says she is called from Mississauga and her driver is broke down in Ottowa. Well, since I don't do a lot of work in Canada, I really didn't know where she was talking about so I asked her where Ottowa is... what province, etc.

The lady was like "You don't know where Ottowa is? It's the nations capitol. It is in Ontario." Then she was very short with me for the rest of call. Crazy Canuck!

Canadians are rightly disgusted with the vast level of american ignorance when it comes to geography. If you're going to break out of this mold of historical geographical incompetence I'd advise you to pick up an atlas and, once you've mastered your own country's states (since most Americans haven't done even that), move northwards and learn Canada's provinces and capitals. Then, for mexico, you have mexico, mexico city, and slums :D

There are 64 parishes in Louisiana and I can probably locate about 10. That is sad considering that I work for LA DOTD and do work for many of the parishes on a daily basis...

My mother in law born and lived her entire life in Montreal still calls us when there is news of storms in Texas, Florida, New York etc. We live in Virginia. That geographical ignorance goes in both directions.

Yes, except it's a fact - insofar as national geographic is concerned - that canadians have better geographical knowledge than yankees. So there!

I'm not even American and I don't know where Ottawa is. Why does it matter? If I need to know I can use a map. Skoorb, can you locate Angola on a blank map?

I don't live near Angola and am not likely to ever visit angola.

The question here is really: Do you know geography that is likely to be of use to you? I can't navigate the euphrates blindfolded, but then that's not really a shortcoming that's ever likely to affect me. On the other hand if I didn't know where georgia is that could hurt me if I need to make a trip there. So the latter is geography I should know for my own use, and the former is useless knowledge.

Many Americans will visit canada and it's of greater import than the location of angola since canada and the US rae more important to each other. Plus the original poster deals with Canada to a small amount so knowing its geography would be of use to him.

Where's Canada? Isn't that a little city outside Alaska?

I'm from Ottawa and have given up being suprised when people )Americans generally) don't know where it is. But I'm about to take a crap fit because you don't know the capital city of Canada offhand.

That's the thing I'm embarrassed about! I don't know WHERE 99/100 truck drivers are when they call me. "Hey I'm here in Nashville, Georgia" yada, yada... it's the fact that the lady was like "It's the capitol of the nation." And I had no idea.

Your nickname is appropriate.
Hmm I'm not really not sure what you're trying to say there. Even though I can't make sense of it, it feels like an insult. My comment was not supposed to be taken offensively. In fact, I commend Redhotjrm for being embarrassed about it. It's the snobs in the US that think they're the center of the world that bother me...
