I'm trying to set up a SETI@Home computer farm and have some basic questions - thanks for any help or web references!

I'm currently using one computer connected to the internet via cable. I just received another computer from school (someone was throwing out a AMDK6-2 400mhz hehe) and am soon going to purchase another, bringing the total to three computers. I would like to share the cable connection with all three computers. Now, as I understand it (from another thread in this forum) if I had permission to have multiple IPs, I could just hook the cable modem into a hub and the hub to each computer, correct? But since I don't, I need a router?

I saw this thread in the Hot Deals forum. It looks nice and it's free after the rebate, but from what I understand it's just a switch and not what I need, correct?

You are correct -- that's probably not what you're looking for.

Try something like this:
random broadband router at bestbuy

If you look for something described as a "cable/dsl router" you'll get what you want. It's generally a simple router with an integrated four or five port switch. Don't spend more than $50. Look for some of JacKMDS's posts...he tends to post links to some nice deals for this sort of thing.

ok, so you are connection via a cable modem?

then behind your cable modem ,you need a router.

unles your ISP allows you multiple IPs (which is doubtful unless you want to pay more). Then you could just ad a hub/switch behind the modem.

behind the router you can hook up all the computers you want(kidn of).

and that is a switch, nota router which you may need,
