Email systems across the country are under attack

All morning we have been unable to get/send emails and finally a server came up, dropped off what it could, then went back down. Included in one of those emails was a message from the admin saying "This morning e-mail systems around the country are under attack."

Anyone else encountering this?

Our servers are running fine this morning. We provide email for 96,000 people.

There was a spike in spam but nothing that would bring us down.

Nope. Your sysadmin is making up stories to cover up for his down servers?

Your workplace != Country. You know techincally he didn't lie. Email systems all over the place are always under attack from spam. He's a smart one.

Well from the sounds of things and no postings anywhere else on the net I'm guessing its pretty well isolated.
We're running a lotus notes server here (that should be enough to get that sysadmin tossed :p) and i imagine that has something to do with it as there is a vuln posted on bugtraq yesterday

There's been an increase in spam the last few days and it's causing backups. If the servers were already running full tilt they might not have been able to keep up.

UPDATE: "The e-mail problem was caused by messages that were purposely designed to bring e-mail systems down. IBM released patches that made the servers immune to the malicious messages. We applied the patches and restored services."

or in other words - we restarted the server

Do you work at a company with a very small IT staff?

No I work at a university (UNLV) with a fairly substantial staff yet completely befuddled when it comes to any sort of server activities.

What he really ment was they installed patchs that are 3 years old but was just to lazy before to do it as "its never been a problem so why should I fix it..."

Bingo. Mail servers are constantly "under attack" by spammers looking for an Open Relay.

Something broke and he has no idea what the hell he's doing --or it's too big of a problem for him to fix before anyone notices and he doesn't want to give out what's really going on for whatever reason.
