email server- two domains?

Hi. I have a domain name, and have a server at home, but its not very reliable (i often turn it off) and want my email to be reliable. Basically, my dad at his office has a server with small business server 2003 on it and exchange server. he uses it as an email server and we can connect to it from home to access email.

What i would like to know, is it possible to also use that server to host my emails.. but under my domain instead of his domain? so i would have the sever hosting email for my domain and for his domain?

Another alternative you can consider is Google Apps for Domains, which is essentially Gmail + Calendar + Docs + Chat + bunch of other Google services, but with your domain name.I migrated my email from Dreamhost to Google Apps and it works like a charm. You can even customize the look and add your own logo.

If you pay $5/month for even the cheapest web hosts, you often will get like 50 free Email accounts.

The problem with using your dad's server is Microsoft Licensing issues (normally per user to connect to the server)....even if you use something other than Exchange. If you do use exchange, I'm sure there may be some licensing things you'll have to do there too. Microsoft doesn't make anything easy.

hey mate thanks sheaps for that suggestions. just signed up and am waiting for it to verify my domain is actually mine. i think this is going to be perfect for what i want and not having to worry about setting up extra software on dads server and addding extra strain to it. great suggestion! cheers mate

Just to finish out this thread:

Access to all SBS 2003 services are covered by a single User or Device license. If your father has spare licenses (usually User licenses), then you'd be set from a licensing point of view.

It's pretty easy to set up an Exchange Server to create new mailboxes and to accept emails for multiple Domains. If you know what you are doing, it takes a few minutes. No additional software is needed. It's basically a change in the Recipient Policy and adding the appropriate email alias to you User account.

A quick Google search or a search of Microsoft's site will show you the steps.
