Email - Receive but cannot send

Hi, not a problem of mine but a friend let someone play about with the iphone, but when he received it back he was unable to send email (was able to before). Doesn't know what he did to cause it, but at the moment is able to receive but not send any emails.

Does anyone know what the problem could be? It is the 3GS.

Also, some ISP's block you from using any outgoing mail servers except their own (Bellsouth used to do this in FL)
