Email on 2 computers?

Have a home pc, and a laptop. Mainly email is downloaded on outlook at home, and I never really use the laptop (gmail.com thats it) to check email. Wondering for those who travel, do you have email setup on both? The thing I see is, if you have a SMTP server on a home ip, and you are on the road, you would not be able to use that server, or would you? Debating on dual email setups.

We're sorry, but Gmail is temporarily unavailable. We're currently working to fix the problem -- please try logging in to your account in a few minutes.

Yes Imap is your friend. You should be able to send mail through your smtp if it is configured to accept connections from external Ip's

i use gmail. one reason is that it's integrated into my firefox, so I can check my mail with one click. another reason is that I can store files on the gmail server (as long as they're under 10mb). a program I have allows for use of gmail as a virtual hard drive. good for archiving stuff.

on both or one you use imap?

You use IMAP on both so that your mail resides on the server and the client, that way you have a complete set of your mail wherever you are.

I never got around to IMAP, but I just choose the "leave on server for x days" so that all my machines get a chance to download all email. (over 3 computers). I also have all my email forwarded to my gmail account so I can access it if I'm away from on of my machines. Although gmail is so slick I've actually been using it as my main mail app even when I'm at home!

see, if you just used imap (assuming support for it is there), you wouldn't have to worry about that 🙂 just pick a reliable provider to host your mail (insert plug for fastmail.fm here)

if gmail only had imap...

eh, I prefer not to host it myself as the email systems are not something I'm familiar w/ if something went wrong. $15/yr to fastmail does the trick. still dunno if i'll switch away from them... google's web interface is really a huge win for me (particularly searching through all my mail)

Heh, but 2.2TB of space for mail > 2gb of gmail 😀 (not that I would ever use up 2GB for mail heh)

I used to host my own IMAP accounts, but was doing it on a cPanel server... which are unable to support nested mailboxes, which is a very very firm requirement for me. Fastmail.FM supports that, plus numerous other features that would take too long to implement in a shared hosting environment, if possible at all... and I don't feel like taking the time/cost to set up my own dedicated mailserver. 😉
