My dad has an eMachines Cyrix-based system. The first one had a power-supply failure and was about a month in the replacing. In the meantime I lent him one of my computers to do his budget spreadsheet (thank goodness we both use MS Works). Other than that failure, it has had no problems. Believe it or not, one of the chief selling points for Dad was the physical size of the tower! 🙂 It has two DIMM slots, two PCI/two ISA (one shared) and now both PCI slots are full, although I could take the modem out if I needed a PCI slot. The built-in video is not for gamers, and it needs to be upgraded from 32Mb of RAM to 64Mb even for Web-surfing, but it's suitable for what he does... and the price was right. For a gamer, I'd go with a hand-picked system. The cheapest way to buy is to buy the right stuff the first time.
