Dads looking for a laptop, he came across eMachines at bestbuy... are they any good? or should he stay away from them like a uncurable std? Any laptop you guys recommend? Thanks in advance guys.

from reading the posts the amd64 laptop by emachines seems to be acceptable to most ATers but imo i would stay away from compaq/hp, emachines/acer, and some dell models for laptops. ibm, toshiba seem to be probably the best for non-gaming intensive purposes from my experiences

Actually some of the newer ThinkPads are just fine for gaming.

If you mean the M680x series, IMO, it's a great deal for the price. Mine's solid and quick, the only complaints are the LCD's backlight tends to flicker a bit at the highest brightness setting and the internal memory slot is an absolute PITA to get to.

Gateway used to by on my shortlist for cheap PCs.. Gateway bought eMachines. I still don't know what to think about it.

The M6805 and M6807 are really good for the price, and their performance is pretty good, too (9000+ 3D Mark 2001).

Thinkpads are really good. Toshibas are pretty nice, also.

The Gateway/eMachines deal was the smartest thing Gateway has ever done. I fully believe they'll return to profitability soon. He should be very happy with the Athlon64 eMachines model.

As for laptops, there are a few good specific models from each manufacturers. My personal favorites:

-HP Pavilion zt3000 series (Centrino based, 15.4" widescreen)
-Any IBM, Toshiba model
-Dell Latitude models

From my research, there may be specific models within a company that are reputable (or not recommended).

From what I have heard about the newer Emachine A64 notebooks. They are very good. I personally love my Pentium-M chips though.

I own an Emachines M6805 which is prob. the laptop bestbuy had on display, I can't say enough good things about it. I'd rec. it to anyone looking for a desktop replacment laptop. For the price nothing else even comes close.

Agreed.

I only buy dell systems at work, laptops/desktops, they have held up very well, solidly built, obviously no gaming going on around here, but performance wise they hold up their own. in any case, don't expect miracles in terms of gaming on a laptop when compared to a desktop, i'm sure you can do well, but it's just not the same.

definately stay away from winbooks 🙂

I find the ibm notebooks to be incredibly ugly, think they've been using that look for years and year from what i remember.

toshibas have always been very solid as well though.

all in all, its kinda like the LCD, everyone sells them rebadged, as ther'es only so many manufacturers that actually make them.

Emachines used to be a joke, but their current laptop offerings are pretty amazing for the price. I recommended one to a friend and she's really happy with it.
