Looking for the least expensive system possible for my 12 year old and having missed the BF deals - seems like this is one of the better deals out there now (before Xmas). With the understanding that it is a budget system that can be enhanced (hopefully) as deals on memory, video cards & LCD monitors pop up over the next couple of months.

To put use of this system into context, he only uses our computer to surf, watch video clips, play Red Alert type games and to do homework (yea right - that our rationalization for getting it 🙂 .

Any comments comparing this deal to other comprables out there NOW.

thank in advance

dave

Currently $399.99 AR at Circuit City and $414.99 at Best Buy, so this looks like a good deal. Probably the best price for a desktop this week.

I'd try to get a X2 3800+ for a budget computer. There have been a few of them in the hot deal sections recently. A single core Pentium just seems too obsolete.

After looking at the paper ad - it shows for an extra $120 ($370 total) you can upgrade the system to a Dual-Core, 1gb memory and 200mb hard drive (thats double memory and on 40gb extra) but significant upgrade on the cpu.

Thinking thats the way to go

WOW! A 200MB hard drive. I keed I keed🙂

thanks dxpaap for the heads up....i ordered one for my 6 and 7 year olds....should be a great system for them and under 300 bucks...

ha ha - 40gb extra insignificant but is the upgrade to the dual-core and extra half gig of ram worth the $120 ?

yes, I'm guessing we are to close to Xmass to get real good deals under $200 - too many people buying for sellers to dump stuff. Maybe after Xmas !

I wouldn't bother with it! I picked one up this morning and spent the rest of the day on the 'phone with tech support.

It's going back tomorrow!

What problems did you have? I got his for my wife's office and everything seems fine with it. I hooked it all up, threw a USB wifi adapter on, and it seemed to be fine. She was on the internet for an hour or so last night.

Just curious what I should be looking out for. If there's a problem, I'd like to find it and take it back if necessary.

I figured it would be a good enough computer for her to surf the internet/MS office, while I slap another big IDE drive I'm using in it for a fileserver.

pretty good machine for kids. and i also found one that in bestbuy on sale yesterday. but i didn't notice the model.

this a much better deal, ddr2, socket AM2, better onboard video, supports dual core, and may support quad core cpu's with a bios upgrade, but even at stock a A64 3500+ beats a P4 3.06ghz by like 25% or more easily.

You've had good luck with CompUSA's eRebates, right?

Yes, I've gotten them all. They weren't generally any faster than mail-ins, but I haven't had any problems with them.

anybody know what the memory config is on this? i assume two lots on mobo, are both used?

add $100 mem and a $130 7900 gs and this is a pretty good $500 gaming system it would seem...
