eMachines computer and 17" monitor at Sam's for $599

eMachines 17" monitor

Hey Aztech,

Welcome to Anandtech. Thanks for posting! The eMachine deal is probably not so good if you are average-moderately computer savvy (capable of building your own system out of components). I haven't been in Sams lately to see what monitor they are offering with this system, but the 17"ers are getting dirt cheap, as are 24x burners...

I think it's an OK first machine.
Aztech didn't say gaming machine.

You just need to add $50 for a new power supply
when the OEM one craps out.

I'd stay away from E-Machines.

I don't mean to thread crap but they really do suck. Kinda like the Yugo of computers. If you know what a Yugo is.

samsung 735df around 100.
256 mb crucial ddr pc2100 around 72.00
40gb harddrive around 80.
16x burner around 40.

so far 292

so i still have about 300 more to spend on mobo+cpu+case+psu.

if i want speed... i'd go with P4 1.6a northwood for 150
and match that up with asus p4333 for 112
that leaves me about 38... for case and psu.
i'd actually spend all that 38 on psu and go bare naked.
300w enhance ENP-0730 for 39.

oh wait.. i forgot about the v-card..

so spend about 50 on gts-v card.

all in all... you've got yourself at least 2-3 times the computer than what you have with emachines.

ok here are the specs on this above mentioned computer!
note that this is an older emachines model (not current product) that sold for $499 when it was current! meaning that the $599 price is high, granted it does come with a monitor but that monitor is a $60.00 HP monitor that is OEMed to Emachines. I would personally calll this cold even it it was a dell dude. At this price that is crazy it must be a walmart leftover that they got stuck with!

Similar deals on Emachines but involving hefty rebates at CUSA, BB, CC etc. These have a reputation of poor quality products with proprietary parts. From what I understand , support is pay as you go and you even have to pay to call in for an RMA#. Warranty service is ship back to Emachine only ( vs onsite or local depot ) . The prices are tempting but........

the only propritary part they use is the power supply! nothing else is propritary! please don't spread false info! they do have a bad rep, possible worse that it should be. and yes the warrantee is a one year swap plan, no repairs just a swap! you do not have to pay to get an RMA, I doubt that would even be legal! stop the insanity!

Man, tough room. Anyway, I know the pc-savvy people can do better but are you gonna build any friends/family a computer everytime one wants a first machine? If so, you must be finding Hot Deals on time somewhere too.

HP 17" monitors are not $60. At least not without coupon, rebate, pricematch and someone you know working there. Besides I doubt eMachines even uses an HP, I'm sure it's something lesser.

It's a good starter machine for email/surfing.

This is a decent deal for those that can't or don't want to build their own machine. I agree that e-machines are not the most reliable. Yes Dell may come close to this price and you would have a much better machine both in speed and reliability. I would seriously look into Dell for anyone considering this computer.

I still think that most people still only use their computers for web surfing, email, and office apps. This is not a bad low cost solution for those people. I bought my Mom a refurb e-machine from the geeks and other than a bad cd-rom which was replaced for free, it has been a good machine. I would never buy this machine for myself, but for the average user it is not a terrible deal.

And to those that think they can build this machine for the same or lower price, maybe... But without any rebates and with purchasing a licensed copy of XP and any of the software on the machine? Not likely.

Bottom line: Decent for those that are average users (no serious 3-d gaming) and for those that don't want to build their own or do the mail order thing from Dell.
