emac no startup disk?

My emac doesn't seem to be working properly, it starts up but nothing shows up on my desktop except the dock, and the finder isn't workin so i can't access my harddrive. i tried to reinstall Panther but there is no destination to install to in the menu...i have documents that i wanted to back up and i can't even access them, how do i get my finder to recognize the harddisk?
 
sounds like a hard drive failure
Ive had a little experiance with Imacs
and that same thing happened to one of them
turned out to be a dead harddrive
