I currently have a Duron 700@950 with 1.85V (read as 1.91 on KT7)and its stable... my goal for this project was to hit 1 Ghz. Unfortunatly, when i up the multiplier to 10X it loses this stability. Is there special tricks that might be able to help this duron hit 1 Ghz? Maybe upping the FSB and lowering the multiplier (9x111? 9.5x105?)? hmm??
 
If you can keep the multiplier at 9.5 and increase the FSB to 105 you'll almost be there. (9.5 x 105 = 997.) However, the real gains will come by increasing the multiplier, not by increasing the FSB. (My Duron 700 runs stable at 1083MHz so don't give up hope yet.)

Other tips:

1. I assume you're using a good HSF and thermal compound. If not, that's where you start.

2. In the bios try setting your SDRAM Cycle Length to 3 (assuming you have it set at 2 now).

3. In the bios set the DRAM Clock to: HCLK+PCICLK.

 
thermal pad is no good
take it off, lap the sink, then use some artic silver...

that should take the temp of full load down by 1-3 degrees.

But then...I have Duron too...it posts at 1Ghz, but unstable in Windows.
It's even unstable when doing 950Mhz. I am using 914Mhz now, which is very stable.

check whether your duron is of the new or old stepping. Apparently, the old stepping overclocks better and go past 1Ghz most of the time, but the new stepping usually have problem when above the 900mhz mark.

Old stepping are made before week 40, so week 39 and before are old
also check by the AKBA or AKCA pre-fix. BA is old, CA is new

Unfortunately, mine is a week 40 Duron..so it's made the first week AMD upgraded to new stepping....maybe that's why it don't go over 950 stable.

I use artic silver with Hedgehog and Delta fan and have a very cool (temp) case. Still no luck reaching 1Ghz.

Motherboard is KT7-100. Memory is Mitsubishi 6ns 128RAM CAS3 PC-133

I plan to upgrade to KT7A soon with 900Mhz TBird as my friend who wants me to build computer will take my current board and Duron.
 
Greg, a couple of things come to mind. How did you unlock the multiplier? This may seem unlikely, but upgrading the pencil on my Duron 600's bridges to loctite defogger grid repair paint got me from 963 to 1035mhz. Plus I don't have to redo it every few weeks. Second, use the bus. 9.5*107 should be possible even if 10x isn't. Good luck.

Also, you don't have to replace the pad, or lapp if your temps are reasonably low, and stable. The thermal pad is second only to AS from what I understand, so leave it on, unless your having temp. problems. You should not be having temperature issues at 950mhz with that hsf. (or at ~1ghz for that matter)
 
greg , the first thing i did when i got my FOP-32 was to scrape off that thermal pad. i have mine on a celly 566 that has been up to 952 so i know the HSF is capable. no offense meant gary.
 
GregGreen: You definitely need to get rid of the thermal pad. Replace it with a good thermal compound.
 
If you do replace the pad, only do so with arctic silver. It is the only one that will lower your temp from the PCTC pad. Do a search for "thermal pad" in this forum for more information. Make sure that you buy from a reputable seller, as there seems to be some fake AS out there. (I can recommend Crazy PC without reservation.) The two main downfalls of the pad are that it needs to get hot and phase-change before it works optimally, and it's a one use solution. Removing the heatsink pretty much destroys the pad.

Your instability doesn't have to be heat either. How is that temp? Much higher than at 950mhz?

The 10x multplier has been elusive for me in the past, too. 9.5*107 has worked several times when 10*100 didn't. Once again good luck.

Conlan, no offense taken- I don't expect everyone to agree with me. Also, although the fop 32 is good on your Celeron this would not translate as good on a Duron, which puts out much more heat. It is good on a Duron, but the comparison is flawed. The Duron is putting out ~ 50w heat at 952 (1.85v) where the Celeron is around 20w less (depending on your voltage).
 
im using an fop32-1 on my tbird 900 and my temps went down when i took off the thermal pad and put on stars-360 thermal grease. i had to remove the pad as i had to change mobos and the pad waslong gone by the looks of it! myu idle temps are ~25c and full load is ~40c, plus im oc'ed to 1ghz from 900, damn pencil trick didnt work right so now im waiting till i get my new case and i take everything out of the old one and locktite it.
