Elton John banned from Egypt for being too gay

OUTSPOKEN British pop icon Sir Elton John was banned from performing at an upcoming private concert in Egypt, the Jerusalem Post reports.
The 63-year-old singer, who is famously homosexual, was apparently barred from appearing at the May 18 show by the head of Egypt’s Musician Union, because of his "anti-religious sentiments."
"How do we allow a gay, who wants to ban religions, claimed that the prophet Eissa (Jesus) was gay and calls for Middle Eastern countries to allow gays to have sexual freedom," the head of the union, Mounir al Wasimi, was quoted as saying by German Press Agency DPA.
The multimillionaire star sparked controversy in February when he commented that there was no tolerance for homosexuals in the Middle East.
"I don't know what makes people so cruel. Try being a gay woman in the Middle East - you're as good as dead," Sir Elton told U.S. news magazine Parade.

He also claimed Jesus was a “super-intelligent gay man” who "understood human problems".
Al Wasimi said his union was the only organization "authorized to allow performances by foreign singers in Egypt."
Geez, you think this would be hit news all over British newspapers.

Not the case...to busy enumerating the awful, devastating results of Israel's "blockade" of Gaza...

You hear that? Palestinians receive canned tuna and meat, but no fruit!!! OH THE HUMANITY!

Criticizing Arab states doesn't sell newspapers. Love to see the reaction if any Western country were to ban EJ for being a homo.

As much as I disagree with most of Islam's stance on this, I hardly think it's fair for Elton to blatantly and repeatably insult what amounts to the majority of a culture, then expect to be welcomed into said culture's domain.

Seriously, if your neighbor screamed how bad you were at you from across the street, and you didn't agree for whatever reason, would you let him come over at your next cookout just so he can continue insulting you? Even if he brings beer?

Did EJ insult Egypt specifically? No. He just said God is gay.

Big effin deal. It's not news that Egypt is a very homophobic nation and gay communities are routinely raided and imprisoned indefinitely.

EJ has been critical of the Arab states policies towards sexual minorities, but so what? Can't take a little criticism? Plenty of American-hating musicians play in America...have some self-respect Mohamed.

Really...no wonder the Arab world is such a cesspool.

I agree with both of you, but Egypt (or at least their government) doesn't see it that way. Their house. As a guest, their rules. You don't like them you can take it up with the Egyptian government.

There is a good reason why Islamic countries are at the lower rungs of the GDP per capita scale despite having enormous amounts of natural resources.

the bitch is back!

So it's ok for him to insult their religion? Me thinks not.

Egypt could've made a lot of money off of EJ's visit but will, instead, make nothing. Too bad for them.

EJ can make plenty of money elsewhere.

But gayness is?

I think it has more to do with what he said about Jesus being Gay than him being gay. Not that I agree.

We can claim the moral high ground, but a lot of Americans don't get that the near-absolute free speech America enjoys is actually pretty rare, even a lot of Western countries don't fully protect it (ie: Australia, Italy). Egypt is one of the majority who don't, and that's just a fact of life.
