That isn't really valid when you are talking about Twitter and the impact it has.
The only way that argument holds water is if Twitter is a monopoly. With the plethora of other social and mainstream media available that’s a tough sell to make.

Never trust anyone who wants to spend 43 billion dollars to avoid a simple background check.

If the Twitter deal falls through...Elon Musk reportedly will announce early Wednesday that he’s invested $914 to buy a 75% share in Truth Social.

Anyway ... Musk seems to believe that the basis of democracy is that every random conspiracy-theory lunatic should have a platform to spread bullshit. It seems to have escaped his attention that facts matter – that they not only matter but that reliable access to facts is crucial to democracy. He seems willfully blind to the reality that America is awash in disinformation to the extent that facts no longer matter. No, Elon, the real threat to democracy is losing touch with reality and being unable to distinguish reality from contrived self-serving fiction.

I am advocating for some guide rails around big-tech because of the impact it has on society and it's reach.
I'm advocating for some guide rails against the wealthiest guy in the world tied to big tech companies in the world who has a huge impact on the world and society because of his bully pulpit, cult like followers, and total hypocrisy on fundamental issues.

Sounds reasonable to me.

So, yeah. Twitter has become kind of the de facto town square. So it's just really important that people have both the reality and the perception that they are able to speak freely within the bounds of the law. So one of the things that I believe Twitter should do is open source the algorithm and make any changes to people's tweets, if they're emphasized or de-emphasized, that action should be made apparent so anyone can see that action's been taken so there's no behind the scenes manipulation, either algorithmically or manually.

This is a red herring. There is no surprise, or secret motivation against banned accounts or blocked posts.

The easily identified cause is misinformation (mostly COVID related) and hate.

And it's NOT an algorithm, it's people that make these bigger decisions.

Not the "shadow ban" shit again ...

So to be clear you think the government should be able to force Tesla and SpaceX to open source any and all of their software?

Or is this another case where the constitution doesn't apply to Twitter for some made up reason?

The Constitution does not import an absolute right in each person to be, at all times and in all circumstances, wholly freed from restraint.

Who is doing that "fact checking" and how do we ensure the person or persons fact checking are not biased?

You think Elon Musk will do a better job, a guy who has tried to silence people because he didn't like their 'facts', and who has very strong political biases and is a hypocrite about having them?

I am. I am saying I don't think it's a good idea that he owns Twitter and am able to call him out for it. But, as I know, it will be hard to get through to the cultists, as we see in this thread.

Because everyone that disagrees with you is a cultist?

Since when did you have the expectation of free speech at your work place?

From the TED talk yesterday.

Elon Musk:

But just in general, like I said, it won't be perfect, but I think we want it to really have the perception and reality that speech is as free as reasonably possible. And a good sign as to whether there is free speech is is someone you don't like allowed to say something you don't like. And if that is the case, then we have free speech. And it's damn annoying when someone you don't like says something you don't like. That is a sign of a healthy, functioning free speech situation.

Techdirt goes into great detail examining Musks Ted Talk and how it demonstrates that Musk has no clue about the importance of content moderation, and how it's accomplished:

It does create an extremely high bar for compulsory speech forced by the government, however.

Musk really seems to just be mad that all the critics and "stock manipulators" that have hurt Tesla so bad have actually made him the wealthiest man in the world.

Apparently, he wants to be the wealthierist person in the world.

Or something.
With a P/E ratio of almost exactly 200, TSLA has clearly been pummeled by the short sellers. ;)

Exactly what is the point of twitter between the incessant narcissistic ramblings of self-important people and pornography?

Twitter is gossip for everyone. Humans love gossiping. Sometimes truth is spoken and sometimes it isn’t but the appeal is that everyone gets in on it.

I assume that’s the appeal, I never use it and except for peoples posts on this forum and news media, I’d never interact or view it.

I just use it for the adult material if we're being honest about it. I've stated in the past I didn't use twitter which is a lie because I use it to follow these lovely women. Anything else just seems like... a waste of time. Tech twitter is either great or bad. After the underfox "troll" saga I'm ignoring it from now on.

Definitely the down side of capitalism if you ask me. Capitalism is the right to build personal wealth, but when great personal wealth spills over into great political control or controlling of the national debate, whatever you want to call it, then capitalism has gone too far. We do need firewalls against people of great wealth who can simply use their money to corrupt our values i.e. freedom of speech, and other laws going far beyond i.e. the enabling of an insurrectionist to push lies about elections and lies about our entire election process.

By owning twitter, this guy can and will enable extremist and conspirators to bleed into the mainstream or as Fox news calls it, the alternative facts. No telling how bad this could get or how far it could go, and simply because a rich guy prefers lies and delusion over truth and fact. Pretty dangerous if you ask me, and this is the downfalls of capitalism spinning out of control.
