EliteXC - new MMA organization

JDMnAR1

Lifer
I noticed a flyer the other day when having lunch for EliteXC (Xtreme Combat) and thought I would check it out. In looking at their website, they just started in 2006 (domain was registered Dec. 1st). One of the principles is Gary Shaw (of boxing promoter Gary Shaw Productions), so they do have some experience in a related field. It looks like their first event is next month - headliner is Frank Shamrock vs. Renzo Gracie - in Southaven, MS (near the casinos at Tunica). The full fight card includes Wesley Correira and David Loiseau, among others. It will also be on Showtime, and maybe Showtime PPV. It will be interesting to see how the rules compare to UFC and Pride.

I wouldn't have high hopes for it. Although it may survive b/c of it's partnership with Showtime. There are just so many MMA orgs right now now. WFA, WEC, IFL, UFC, PrideFC, CageRage, EliteXC, Bodog. Although I give credit to EliteXC for getting Shamrock to fight. Supposdly they also got Nick Diaz.

I don't think it'll happen. I believe it is the state athletic commissions that decide on this. It is not up to the organization. Like with Pride came to the US, they typcially allow knees, kicks, and stomps to the head of a downed opponent. The NSAC did not allow them to do this when they came to the US. Elbows to the head are allowed by the NSAC though.

hmm looks as if its the castoffs of UFC. though i did like cabbage.

and having Bill goldberg as a announcer? yeah..

The Rules should be the same as UFC. Dailymotion.com gots videos of all fights.

I watched all but the main, it was on at work, but I had to leave. Yep, that Gina girl was very pretty. It was also an excellent fight between her and the other woman. Better than the Louiseau fight...and the Cabbage fight...

I thought it may be a joint venture of sorts. Herb Dean and Steve Mazzer..whatever were both referees, both from UFC.

No. They are issued by the NASC

He kneed Gracie in the back of the head twice; it was a disappointing end.

Ahh, I was unaware. What about McCarthy? He was with UFC before it was ever sanctioned, if I remember correctly. I assume he just became qualified and carried on like he did before?

I'd read somewhere else that the refs are assigned by the NSAC. And yes, that's correct about McCarthy.

Production was superb. It's on par with the UFC. With more shows under their belt, the show can only get better. The only thing I have a gripe with is Gary Shaw's fifteen second rule. Most people don't understand grappling and often times just think it's two guys rolling around. It's actually a very careful chess match once it gets down to the ground. I noticed that when Renzo was advancing position in the main event, even though he was being active they still got stood up. I didn't like that. That's my only gripe but the production was extremely well! I can't wait for their next show.

You're correct. The atheletic commissions have a pool of refs to choose from and normally go with the same bunch that the UFC uses such as Herb Dean, Steve Mazzagatti, Mario Yamasaki, BJM, etc.

EXC has a 15-second maximum on the ground?

only if the ref determines that nothing is happening. There is a warning and they go on the clock. If they clock runs out the ref stands them up.
