The Lucas Empire Strikes Back - Seriously, how could they put EpIII up prior to it being released and not expect some kind of legal reprecussions?

""Our goal is to shut down as much of this illegal operation as quickly as possible to stem the serious financial damage to the victims of this high-tech piracy-"

thats the best quote.
Didn't Episode III pull in $150Million opening weekend? My lord BT really crushed it.
What makes me laugh about these raids on BT and such is the pure stupidity and more specifically the ignornace of the people writting them and reporting on them.

Agreed. It's sad, but news journalists really don't know specifics about anything. They just get some facts (usually not all) and write a story to fill a time slot. They don't really care about the accuracy as long as they don't misrepresent someone or cause any lawsuits.

The studios are mainly after P2P/BT to protect their dvd sales which have become a huge source of income ($24 billion last year alone, compared with about $9.5 in total box office sales).

While I don't like some of the methods the recording industry, and increasingly the film industry, are using they are fully within their rights to not want their product freely distributed without proper compensation.

Actually what makes me REALLY laugh is the stupidity and ignorance of people still using BT for stuff. You couldn't paint a bigger bullseye on your @ss.

Basically I think the same thing. Most of them are idiots.

Yep, if you're in the US you should not be using something like BT. Canada doesn't care though ;)

I never said they didn't have the rights. Never even suggested that. They throw around "loss of revenue" numbers with reckless abandon. RIAA talks about 10% revenue loss but fails to mention 7% decrease in # of albums released (dont quote me on those numbers bu they are fairly accurate for example purposes).

They methods and perposterous, and their tactics assinine. If they would forgo the shortterm losses and hurdles and look at a way to embrace these technologies to help them GROW in the future (like some music labels and artists slooooooooooooooowly have) it seems to me to be a better avenue.

And paying for a Usenet service with a credit card with your name on it doesn't paint a bullseye on you?

While it is a risk, it is HARDLY a risk compared to BT.
Now what I don't understand is how BT sites are any different than say newzbin.com
its exactly the same damned thing.

Without an easily apparent financial upside the entertainment industry is not big on change.

Not really, beacuse you can be tracked unequivocally with your IP anyway, so who cares if they happened to use your CC number. In any case, many usenet providers do not keep logs, and specifically state as much, so then all somebody sees is that you're a subscriber to a usenet server--and they all have a lot of legal content, as well.
