Yeah. It's all online play connected to the server, and plenty of npc ships flying around. But it's instanced and you can do solo, small group multiplayer (friends), or full multiplayer. And you can switch play modes whenever by logging off and then back on.

Well small group play was in the works...was it added in the last patch? I haven't checked patch notes.

There is solo, group, and open. Solo is, well, solo. Group means the only real people you will ever see are other people in the group. This has been used to create PvE only groups. Open is just that; open. Open means you will have the ability to fly with anyone, but it does not mean you always will fly with everyone. Instances still separate people. Friends tend to be grouped together.

New in 1.2 was the "Wings" function. A Wing is a group of up to 4 people that are in close contact. It auto-enables voice comms (though it can be disabled), shows them on your galaxy map, and slaves the FSD. What that means is that it is easier to drop in to places with your Wing from supercruise. So if a Wing member gets interdicted you can follow them, or if they drop into a signal source it gives a wider range of speeds and distances you can drop in from.

So what is the best way to play ? Maybe solo for the first 10 hours then switch it up to open when I know what I'm doing ?

Sure that would work. It doesn't really matter though because you can switch back and forth without any repercussions.
I've noticed that solo is a little better if you want to get into exploring or trading. It seems like everyone wants play the life of a pirate which can make certain trades a little more difficult on open play.

Honestly I'm a bounty hunger/merc. If it's combat and it pays I'm usually there.
It's quite fun and makes you a fair amount of money. Hunting sideys and cobras in RES's is how I made my first 100k ad now that combat has been made more profitable it should be easier.

I need wingmen to help with the Lugh conflict. FYI the community goal for Federation is up to 12 million reward at the end of next week if you are just in the top 40% percentile. I can't really do the conflict zones in open play because too many other people around killing CMDR's on-sight, but solo play is boring. Need wingman to do it in a private group for best profit.

The trade mission is also 3 million or so reward and that is just for ~500 tons or so of deliveries.

Anyone interested in doing some combat tonight, PM me.

I'm down, haven't flown in a while, what time-ish?

I bought it !!!!!!!!! Should I use my joystick or is mb+mouse a decent option in this game ? I am really really bad with joysticks...

I agree try both. I was able to play just fine with a kb+mouse but I do love my HOTAS.

Hey Bubbleawesome how did the Lugh campaign settle out or is still coming to an end?

The goals are wrapping up. CSG defended a station and started an assault on another, and since they fought their trading goal instead of just grinding combat they seem to have a slight advantage. One goal only has 19 hours left and might take that long while another has 1 week left and should be done by the end of tomorrow.

The CSG goals left are the combat and intel
Feds seem to have intel, weapons, and one other. I'm not sure though because I haven't fought for them.

Oh boy, the president has gotten herself in trouble.
Disaster struck in Lugh today, following orders given by President Halsey demanding that Federal pilots attack and destroy an unarmed refugee convoy as it fled from the fighting around Lugh 6. It is estimated that 9,322 innocent Federal civilians lost their lives in the attack.
The President claims that she was presented with evidence by the Joint Intelligence Committee which confirmed that Éamonn Uí Laoghire, leader of the Crimson State Group, would be aboard one of the transports with his entourage.
However, sources close to the Crimson State Group claim that reports of Éamonn’s presence on the refugee ships were nothing more than fabrications.
Shadow President Hudson has sworn that an official investigation into the matter will be launched once the current crisis is over.

You know that those galnet news things are written by random players, and have nothing to do with anything that happens in the game? It's like a fan fiction feed.

Every post is written by a group of people selected by Fdev. They even get their own forum to decide what to write. While it might be closer to fanfiction, it is at least endorsed fanfiction. 😛

Sooooo, I guess I'll post it here. A galnet post was recently posted too early and then taken down, but it revealed a competition going on soon. There will be canisters called "NVIDIA TITAN Black Prototypes." The first 5 commanders to buy one from a station and turn it in somewhere gets one for free. I want one so bad but with another 500k+ in the galaxy and me being out for the next few days it's impossible. IT MAY BE A BLACK OR AN X. The article might be wrong. See the below posts.

EDIT: THE WAR FOR LUGH IS OVER! The CSG has (at least for now) repelled the federation out. Hartsfield market is now CSG controlled. I expect counterattacks though.

What I read made no mention of Titan X, but rather Titan Black.

Oi, sounds right. People were discussing that it might be the X instead of Black and I got it mixed up. 😳
The news post did say "will get a TITAN Black when they are released", leading me to think it might be an error.

Yeah I think it's a screw up. Isn't it a bit late to be promoting the Titan Black? Would have made more sense performance wise to give away 980s instead if they really aren't doing Titan X.

The Titan Black contest is on! Must be turned in to Godel Ring in open play only. Available unlimited supply at mystery starport. I suspect most people while just try their luck trying to camp Godel Ring and steal one. You can buy 500 and then dump them all outside the station as a distraction though haha.

What's the learning curve for someone who is a complete noob to the Elite series?
I picked it up in about 2 hours, though I've gotten much better at combat since. My brother took about 3-4 days though.

The curve itself is kinda steep I guess. I'd play the combat tutorials first.
