I would agree; there's a vast amount of content, but it's almost all exactly the same and generally grindy. That said, the actual core mechanics of ship flying and combat (particularly with a DK2) are very good. I just don't start up Elite simply because I'm in busy season and have no time to grind, and recently even to pop into my Viper and troll the RES.

Yes they got the core mechanics down, and that is really the only reason why I still play the game. Simply flying around in space is a nice little stress reliever for me. But it just magnifies everything that the game still lacks.

Yep. I sat there looking at the commodities screen yesterday for like an hour and then got up and didn't even play. I really need to get back into combat but then I go up against bigger ships and I'm not that great in a cobra or viper so I feel like I need to go back to trading to grind out another 10mil credits and then blah....I just walk away. To be honest I'm not even that stoked about the wings expansion....what is it bringing anyways just the ability to have partners or something?

I want to land on planets and do some FPS and then jump in my ship and fly home.

The main thing I'm looking forward to in terms of non-essetional features is walking around inside of ships. A cobra looks nice inside, let alone a python, clipper, or even anaconda.

I know you can have wingmen, not sure if that means humans or NPCS or both or what not....really won't help me out much unless I can transport more goods. They need to fix mining too. Buncha bitches. For weapon size, 1 medium = ~2.5 small and 1 large = ~2.5 medium weapons of the same type. There is a damage penalty for using smaller weapons against larger ships. Medium weapons do 50% damage to large ships and small weapons do 50% less damage to medium ships (and 75% less to large ships). The penalty does not apply to shields, only hull damage. Gimballed weapons do 25% less damage than fixed weapons.

Energy weapons do more damage against shields and kinetic weapons do ore damage against hull. Some weapons do more damage to systems than others (e.g. rail guns) although I'm not sure about hard numbers on that part.

Well my original question was about the difference between small and medium beams. I've already been using 2 C2 beams and 4 C1 multi-cannons, I was just curious what the actual numbers are, because it's kinda odd that the game has been out for a while now and we still don't have hard numbers for a lot of things.

No that is not the preferred loadout unless you like to rely on beams for ammo conservation reasons. As I said, small weapons get a damage penalty against hulls of larger ships but not shields. Therefore it would be better to have medium multicannons and small lasers. On the Asp I prefer the two fixed small beams in the center hardpoints which are easy to hit with and then 2 medium and 2 small multicannons.

So, I just lost my ASP through a bug of some kind.

I came out of SC at a station. Requested docking permission, was granted. Land on pad 35. Fine. As I'm approaching the station entrance port, I got a big red pad loitering warning and a 30 second timer to vacate the pad.

WTF, I'm not even inside the station, how can I be loitering over someone else's pad. :|

I turned around and retreated out to about 3km and lost the loitering warning.

Okay, let's try this again.

Same deal. As soon as I got within about 500m of the station's entry port, I got a pad loitering warning. Fluff it, I'm just going to push on through and land at my pad. 30 seconds is more than enough time to land on pad 35.

The moment I got through the atmosphere barrier into the station, with 21 seconds left on the pad loitering warning, the station opened fire, destroying my ship.

God dammit. There goes a mil plus.

I did lose my clipper once to a bug, just blew up and died instantly inside the station with no warning. I think they fixed that bug though luckily.

What would you guys do in my position? Currently have an Adder with 16 slots for Cargo, and decent hard points. Should I continue with trading and bounty hunting or switch over to mining full time with trading on the side? Trying to save up for a better ship.

Currently in Aeternitas with an 18.6b population; is that high?

Having lots of intermittent network issues on Open Play causing tons of bugs.... Really want to play Open Play more!

If you can manage to afford a trading ship AND a combat ship, then that's the way to go. A jack of all trades ship just isn't good at either one.

Now, because combat is more fun to me, I saved up for a Type 6 by hunting wanteds and then used that Type 6 to save up for a combat ship.

I did eventually sell the Type6 and bounced back and forth between hauler and combat ship (selling the existing ship for the new chassis) with the focus solely on cargo capacity for trading but if I did it again I wouldn't go that a route. I didn't like having only one of the two types of ships at a time. When friends wanted to go blow stuff up, I was stuck in my hauler. When friends were talking about great new trade routes, I was stuck in my combat ship.

And having said THAT, I don't really want to haul anything ever again until I can afford to buy and properly fit a Type 9 and have Python in reserve. Though, with the cost of fuel and repairs on the Python, I'm going to need that Type 9 just to keep my wallet in the black. The Python is stupid expensive to maintain.

That's among the largest population systems out there. I want to say Sol has around 14b. I haven't seen any with 20b yet personally. And it depends on how quickly you want a better ship. You'll do that quickest by either focussing on bounty hunting or on trading full time til you can afford the new ship. If you want to trade, outfit the ship with as much cargo space as possible which is 26 for the adder, and trade til you have enough for the new ship. If you want to bounty hunt, outfit it as the most capable combat ship you can afford and go kill stuff til you upgrade. Well, I say that, but I don't have a clue what kind of profits can be made from mining, because I haven't tried yet. Anywho, focus on 1 thing and grind out the cash. The cobra is well worth it, because it's a significant step up in capabilities. But don't do stuff that's so boring as to make you quit .


As an aside, maybe he is trolling you Thin, but you're not making yourself look any better with those responses. You don't handle the trolling very well. Both of you provide valuable input at times, but all that is just pointless bickering on both ends.

Another aside, I finally made it into a Asp, and boy does it fly like a dream compared to the Type 6! It's a very worthwhile stepping stone to me. I'm gonna keep grinding away at trading as long as I can stand it...sure would like to make my way into a Type 9 and/or Anaconda one of these days. I might sit down tonight and compute how many hours that would take though lol. I play maybe 6-10hrs a week.
