Elite Dangerous

As someone who played Elite back in the days I am extremely looking forward to Elite Dangerous. Almost more than for SC or GTA V on the PC.

I know that a comparison ED/SC is probably silly because both games will likely be good in their own way..besides none of the games is yet released.

I think that Space Sims are probably amongst the coolest game genre ever...but almost any space sim which was released has some serious flaws or something about it which I consider a turn-off. (That's one reason for example I never wanted to get into EVE).

Is anyone else as excited for Elite Dangerous as me?

Does anyone else think it's irony that some of the potentially coolest games to be released (ED / SC) are originating from Kickstarters....as if the mainstream gaming companies don't even have an interest anymore to make really cool and unique, games...but rather recycle and rehash old crap over and over...

If ED is only 1/5th as good as the trailers suggests it will be crazily good...probably THE best game in the last decade(s)....my $0.02

No. Elite for me ended with Frontier.

I'd like a similar type of game but slapping it with the Elite moniker gives it a kiss of death for me. It will not live up to expectations derived from nostalgia.

same. if ED is anything like elite, i'll be *bad*.

i mean seriously, elite was horrible. the only cool thing about it was that we got it in 1980. don't get me wrong, i have played countless games of elite (always ending with me crashing trying to dock at the spacestation), but i have also played thousand of games of Burger Time, Dig Dug, Donkey Kong 2, and Super Mario 64, but that doesn't mean i want to play them again today.

flying from point A to point B, killing the same 4 spaceships over and over again; Lave to Zaonce, grain here and machinery there. wow. so much fun.

but - if it's a new game, i guess we will just have to wait and see. i haven't got much hope, space sims tend to be pretty bad, either on the side of pewpew FPS shooters, or boring unbalanced stats-based snoozefests like EVE. (moar circling plx)

To be honest, I am totally shocked by the lack of replies here...and the two (so far) rather negative replies.

Even if we assume that it WOULD be "the same game", how would that be different from many other games where you're sent around, say, on killing missions to get a reward...or grinding in WoW...or whatever other mindless and linear games?

If ED *would* just be a "modern" Elite with no additional elements (which I certainly don't believe) the idea of trading in an open/sandbox universe with billions of planets to discover AND the option to be a pirate etc....even with THAT simplicity sounds appealing to me.

The challenge is obviously to equip your ship, getting new upgrades etc...exploring billions (!) planets etc...and (as I see it) on my own pace and also to engage in PvP when I feel like it.

It's probably exactly THAT simplicity which I think is appealing..and this is only ASSUMING that the game will be that simple.

Honestly I am stunned getting 2 "meh" replies here while anyone else is going gaga over SC?

You know, I don't know TOO much about any of the two games....but I know that SC will be more linear in a way that it will have cut-scenes and other "short-cuts" while Elite will (supposedly) be more like a real simulation.

I'd hate a "space simulation" where you click with your mouse on a planet and then click a button and then quick/hyper-travel to your destination with a "cut-scene" of your arrival. This would be a huge turn-off for me. I'd actually enjoy a universe where I need to fly long distances and a time to get there....for a real "feel" of what I'd expect from a space-sim.

Star Citizen?

Couldn't be less bothered about that either personally. I signed up to their website/newsletter before things were "launched" and decided against it. Nothing that has been said or done has moved my 'care' meter.

It's a case of 'wait and see' really but there's nothing that has me vaguely excited about either game. I'll read player opinions once they're released/patched a bit but until then... yeah, I'll be keeping an eye on some other indie projects and watching out for Dawn of War 3.

I played both Elite & E2: Frontier. I thought the latter was way better than the former for a combination of reasons (certainly for mouse input controls). If Elite Dangerous is pretty much a modern remake of E2 frontier, I'll be quite happy with it though.

i used to play Space Rogue (1989) and it was better in graphics, had the same open-ended multiple-universes thing, factions, trading, newtonian flight physics, plus moddable spaceships, better AI, and a whole RPG adventure to booth, not to mention equipment and on-the-ground 2d action.

I'm not saying ED would be bad - it would just be a 1980s game, and honestly i don't have any interest in that, just like i have no interest in playing Wasteland 2 if it's the same as W1.

Elite was groundbreaking; give me a new groundbreaking game, and i will be amazed. Give me the same stuff rehashed, and i'll be bored and disappointed.

I backed for Elite Dangerous primarily out of support for the genre, though I do hope the gameplay is entertaining enough to capture my interest until Star Citizen comes out.

That capital ship battle video was promising, though a bit rough around the edges.

Its been nearly 2 decades since I played Frontier Elite 2. I welcome an up to date elite but I am not sure that style of game play is something I would find compelling today, and if its not like those games I don't know what the game is. So I am cautiously watching what it does from afar.

Can someone of you explain to me what you consider "that style of game" which would make it "outdated" or somehow not suitable for "today"? I mean...here in the thread was someone seriously comparing ED with Donkey Kong? What makes ED an "outdated 80s" game?

I think what they are referring to is that modern games are all quick time events, cut scenes, linear, quest hubs, and so on.

That to actually have to learn and build up a ship in elite much like the original would not be appealing today.

But to each their own. I had more hours into X3:Rebirth with its much similar gameplay as the original Elite, than I did with any God of War game.

That said. I know Frontier Elite 2 was one of my favorite games from the early 90's. Unfortunately it ran like crap on my Amiga back in the day, and I found it hard to play. It had like 5 fps tops.

combat in elite:

pull joystick up, loop until the enemy comes in your crosshair, shoot.

the issue with space sims is that they are not sims;

if ED is an arcade game, i'm not interested. It's not the 80s~90s anymore and pewpew sounds + flashing lights don't make a game.

If it's a serious spaceflight sim, i'd be more keen. But i said this already in my earlier post.

i'm not sure what you mean; dock at a spaceport and buy a military laser for 6.000 credits?
thta's about as far as the customization options went in Elite "the original".

i played on a C64, fyi.

Out today with the Alpha release.

Two things strike me in comparison to the elite games. This is not a realistic flight model, ships turn like they are aircraft. The second is the combat really bares no relation to the original games whatsoever, in style or anything. This is more Freespace than it is elite. I don't doubt this style is more enjoyable actually but its interesting to me they threw away the elite combat system entirely.

There's a reason why space games don't do realistic combat... because if they did combat the way it would actually be in a space sci future, it would be incredibly boring. Star Citizen's devs have said the same thing, they're going with the dog fighting approach because it's actually fun to do, unlike a "real" space battle which would be largely computer driven and from such far distances that you would never actually see your enemy with your own eyes.

this and star citizen look promising. thinking about donating to chris roberts space industries and getting a game. x3 gold is fairly intertaining to me. many ways it could be better but the game hits a fairly good basic gameplay. is x3 rebirth as bad as people say it is. how good is x3 albion.

Rebirth is a complete flop. And sales are in the ground. It was an alpha release at best.

how would a video game made with realistic physics for space fighters work? would people like it? could you turn a ship fast enough with no drag?

You never tried the previous versions of Elite I guess 😉

No I haven't, but having proper physics is only half of it. Battles would not be fought within visual human range.

True.

Space fighter combat would also be something like cubes most likely. Certainly not the fighters we see in games and movies.

for me, it all boils down to how "arcade-y" the game is. there's been tons of trading sims with toms of options each; because, in the end, it's just "pirates" + "wings" rolled into one.
and given they have their head in the clouds (really, call this Elite, why ? because its 1988? because 40yo players are your market?), i fear this will come out as a simplified version of X3. And that is something im really not interested in.

back to wing commander. it had *everything* you could wish in a game like this.
1) different weapons, ship systems handling
2) a campaign with a story and real characters
3) upgrades in ships and weapons, vith visible results
4) an interesting universe with different enemies, ships, factions.

so if ED comes out being just another "fly in space, shoot stuff" game, it will be WC with better graphics. And that's what we played 20 years ago, and i no want.

Frankly, to interest me, ED would need to have:

1)realistic survival elements, where long distance travel in space is a dangerous affair.
2)dangerous firefights, not just "here's a bunch of ships, kill them - they give points"
3)a serious Sp campaign, that can be beaten only by building up from your start point, not just "buy military lazorz, win game".

otherwise you have
1) FTL is better
2) Strike Vector is better
3) even Space Rogue was better

Definitely piquing my interest based on playing Elite and Frontier back in the day, but it'd probably only stick with it if the world really felt 'alive'; somewhere that you really wanted to spend a while in, even if just hanging around at your favorite station.

Whether ED can offer this still remains to be seen, but I'll definitely give it a shot, probably in the latter stages of the beta. It'll be out way before Star Citizen, that's for sure.
