"Eli Lilly & Co. expanded a layoff to 1,000 workers because of falling sales of its anti-psychotic medicine Zyprexa. "

didn't realize it took 1000 workers to make a psycho drug line. wonder if any of the 1000 was a single executive

here's the irony:

1) lack of psycho's causes them to lay off 1000 some of which become psychos, thereby increasing demand and causing lilly to rehire pyschos

Pretty funny stuff - laugh it up...

That medication is used to treat schizophrenics, not psychos. Its a pretty serious disease and is about as funny as cancer.

Lilly is taking it on the chin for several reasons. The patent for fluoxetine (Prozac) expired several years ago but neither of the offshoots Prozac Weekly and Sarafem have taken off. Their newest drug is duloxetine (Cymbalta) is just starting to make a dent in the market but it will make a pretty big dent since it's pretty good.

Olanzapine (Zyprexa) is losing market share b/c other drugs in its class have fewer side effects.

Actually one drug in olanzapine's class is quetiapine (Seroquel) which gets most of its sales from treating Alzheimer-related psychosis. Olanzapine and risperidone (Risperdal) were collecting $1B or so a year in this offlabel indication until the FDA told them to cut it out since it doubled or tripled the rate of strokes.

Don't worry. If Bush wins the election, business for psychotic treatments will be brisk again.
Bush's share of medication alone will keep them afloat.

That, and Bush/Ashcroft protected Lilly from lawsuits via a convenient rider on the Patriot Act to make Lilly immune from lawsuits re:thimerosal.

It's not really a big deal since it is unlikely that thimerosol is actually the source of much damage. It is a curious choice considering Lilly has abandoned the vaccine market. A more prudent choice would be to provide legal protection to companies like Aventis that make a lot of vaccines. If I had to guess I would say the absence of campaign contributions was a factor.
