The anime style is so kiddy for its graphic nature. Does not mix well. Hell, all anime is like that now.

I've never been a fan of anime where the characters had animal ears, but I have to say Elfen Lied looks kinda cool.

I wouldn't compare it to Berserk. Berserk kicks ass. Elfen Leid is just tacky anime harem melodrama with a superficial violent coating.

Some people are so precise. That's exactly it!

I never said it was better, just the same in terms of "fvcked up" and "violent" but yeah Berserk is one of my fav.. along with Hajime No Ippo, Champloo, Bebop, and some other ones too lazy to think of.

I used to watch a fair bit of anime, but the whole otaku (or whatever that word is) culture turned me off. One of the shows I did watch however was Elfen Lied. I liked it a fair bit back when it was released, but I tried rewatching some of it recently and it didn't really do anything for me. Anime I still enjoy is Cowboy Bebop and.... that's about it. heh.

I'm assuming you're being sarcastic. I could go through the whole shebang and explain scene by scene why I said that. However, most people who watch anime seriously are familiar enough with the wide world of anime cliches to understand what I meant without further elaboration on my part.

Could you recommend some good anime?

Nope, not being sarcastic. Although.. having reread my response, it does sound a bit sarcastic.

- Berserk
- GunGrave
- Cowboy Bebop
- Samurai Champloo
- Wolf's Rain (if you can handle a healthy dose of anime pretension)
- Death Note (lots of cliche, moral pretension, but I give it credit for it's interesting premise)

I'm sure there are other decent ones I'm just blanking out on now. The first four I listed are ones I'd recommend to anybody, the latter two are for anime fans only.

Since the search works decently now, search through the dozens upon dozens of anime threads.

Totally true, yet I still finish the series. There were a few high points, and one of them was the opening song.

Yeah, and of course I finished it! I've watched anime way worse than Elfen Lied, believe you me, and significantly longer as well. I'll go in for some cheap entertainment if I have nothing better to do, but I won't give it praise.

It was no Memento but I thought the writers did an interesting job of revealing the back stories of the characters bit by bit.

The ultraviolence was entertainingly over the top, but I agree the animation style didn't really fit with it.

While I had fun reading Berzerk for a while (though it derailed too much after a while) the anime was dully unimpressive to poorly done IMO. Elfen Lied wasnt anything spectacular either, a bit overrated by some I felt. The show really tries hard to push sadness as its theme, but the lasting impression of it is undue violence if anything.

As for revealing back story thing, try Daphne in the Brilliant Blue (Hikari to Mizu no Daphne). Excellent storytelling-wise (one of the few series I enjoyed a lot despite the not-so-attractive drawing style) all throughout. Few others I might suggest - Mahoraba, Uta-kata and Asatte no Houkou.
Among more recent series, sola was quite decent - a very well rounded show overall.
