here is an idea: build an elevator that creats a near-perfect seal. When in operation, you would have the top and bottom vented to outside, so the elevator would be able to move, but the big red button would close both vents and the elevator would eventually come to rest on the superior air pressure underneath it, and if the seal was slightly imperfect, it would just slowly float to the bottom.
Hey, you could even design cable-less elevators this way, just pump air in the bottom to make it go up.
