I'd be kind of suspicious about what they were doing in the first scenario. Obviously they would've been one of the first people in the elevator if they were against the wall - so it's not like they were forced to stand that way. Strange. Not sure. I mean, some people would probably assume the worst and just not get on the elevator thinking he might be up to something.

The second scenario isn't so bad because if someone gets on a crowded elevator, sometimes if they're walking on it's not like they'd have room to turn around - so that's not as strange. Then again, if I was the person facing them, I'd hope they had minty fresh breath.

Another hypothetical situation. You are riding the elevator down. The elevator stops on a floor and a person walks in and faces all of you who are riding down. What is your first reaction? How do you feel?

First person is masturbating.
Second person is about to.

Person facing back of elevator - I'd think they are kind of wierd, wonder what they were doing. Then I'd face the front like normal and ignore them.

Person getting on and facing everyone else. I'd look at them briefly to see who they are, wonder to myself why they aren't facing the front like normal people. Then I'd look forward and avoid eye contact with them since it would be kind of uncomfortable.

Despite the varied answers in this thread, I'd bet the majority of people would react the same way.

Hmmm, I guess another question would be how awkward is it to try and have small talk on the elevator... ("do I say hello? just look at the floor lights? Look at the panel? Is that a booger in his nose? Should I tell him? Oh sweet, he's getting off...") gotta love the uncomfortable silences....

We did an elevator study in a qualitative methods class I took and we discovered that there are about 150 rules people follow. There are published papers on this very topic!

Everything that people do, from approaching and waiting, to where they stand inside the elevator, is dictated by unspoken rules. Even when people do weird or strange things (facing the wrong direction, standing too close), there are measured responses and cues.

Situation 1 (person looking back when I enter): Ignore them.

Situation 2 (person looking back when they enter): Ignore them.

So basically you are using us to do your homework since you are too lazy to do it yourself. Wonderful.

pretty sure the proper reaction is that of John McLane in Die Hard with a Vengeance.

Most annoying thing is people who take the elevator for one floor when they're not carrying anything, and the stairs are right next to the elevator. Lazy asses!

Try it sometime. Go into a crowded elevator and face all the people and see how they react.

Goodness, someone just took an intro to psychology class. Do your own homework.

I like to strike up conversation with strangers on the elevator. I also like to talk to people in the mens room though too.

some elevators have doors on both sides, maybe the floor the person wanted to go to opens opposite of the floor that you called?
