ah. Excellent point I foolisly hadn't considered. I'll have to test it with one battery connected and another laying on top to see if it can even support it. That might just put the kabash on the whole idea right quick.

Yeah, its not going to be easy but I think it'll be sweet if I ever start the thing, let alone finish it.
 
Marc R, I took apart the main housing on the 2nd (broken) hovercraft and discovered some diodes that look identical to the ones you just mentioned. Markings: "C3420". Does this number mean anything to you?

Yup, it means it's a transistor, not a diode.
