Where better than ANAND to ask for free advise?

I have an electric potters wheel, 120AC hookup with a DC motor, a motor controller and an aluminum cast footfeed for speed control, ( 0 to 250 rpm ). I would like to be able to have a LED and a counter of some sort that would give me instant visual feedback as to the rpm the wheelhead is turning. Any suggestions on either an "off the shelf" gizmo that would fill the bill, or clear instructions on how to fabricate such an animal?
Any and all helpful advise is appreciated.

Thanks guys,

Haywyre

How about a bycicle computer. It'll tell you speed in mPh, plus it'll time you. You could race yourself.:)

Forget to mention, the shaft is 1" diameter and the wheelhead is 13" diameter.
