What is this component on this hard drive board? It blew out when I plugged the power cord in backwards. Stupid, I know. Is it a fuse?

I honestly have no idea. I think I must have angled it in or something and only got the 12v and grounds in before it popped. I thought the same thing.

HOW did you plug the cable in backwards? And thats a surface mount cap, you'll never replace it sucessfully. You can get a new curcuit board for it though.

If you burned the cap that badly, there is a good chnace stuff around it is busted too....but you could try replacing it. I am not sure how to read the numbers on the cap though......

what do you mean? I solder and desolder surface mounted resistors and caps with ease.

A) I think I could replace it if I wanted to, but really I would just want to temporarily put another cap over it. I just need the data off.

B) Please tell me about ordering another circuit board. I just bought a drive off ebay that was manufactured only 7 days after my other one and it still didn't work.

might be able to solder in a can capacitor but I am not sure how to figure out specs of blown capacitor. looks like it is identical to c62

Why not backup your friends HD, take his circuit board and backup your data and get a new HD?
 
Yeah, plus I have a pic of the cap that's supposed to be there in the first post. There's no way to find out what it is?

even if you replace that cap with another one there's still no telling how much damage the other components took.

then you probably damaged something inside the drive as well

 
I think you'd be very lucky if just replacing that cap fixes your problem. Even then, it's not an easy fix. Where do you plan on finding that cap? Not Radio Shack, I'm sure. Then you would have to know how to do surface mount soldering.

QFT. A cap does not act like a fuse. If you overloaded that cap, chances are the other components took a volt/current spike as well.
 
I've done a successful circuit board swap between same model drives to pull data off the drive with the dead board. I'd definitely back up the good drive first before trying it, though.

Why not? I don't need an SM cap if it's temporary. I just need to know how big the cap is and I'll pick up a can one. It's only to recover whats on there. If it doesn't work, too bad, I'm out a couple cents.
