...so yeah... they esentially lost it... because they no longer have the right to it.

I see... they couldn't compete on gameplay and pricing alone with Sega pricing at 19.99... makes sense business wise, but for us gamers... *sigh*

oh wow this is truly sad. I wish people would think before they buy another EA product. The more products of theirs we buy the more powerful they become.

I think EA has the chance to destroy the gaming industry. So f u EA, f u!!!!

As long as they make good products I don't care, i.e. Sim City 4... but with madden and the NBA Live Series they competition helped insure that their stuff was on point... Without it, they can get by just updating rosters and adding new voice overs with no real improvement to gameplay...

What's really amazing is that it's a 15 year deal. EA has only made football games for 15 years; they'll be the only ESPN-using publisher until 2020.:Q

so sega cant use nfl and espn in the future..... is there anything stopping them from releasing updates to the old 2k series? would that be a way around the licences? you could update the players and teams probably without a problem I would think, but what about the software? could you do that with a machine that has a hd like xbox?

Also worth nothing that EA has tried to buy exclusive rights to the NBA but the NBA rejected their initial offer. I'm sure they are working on another....

sega could do a college football game, or maybe the cfl hahaha
one of the funniest things i've ever seen/heard in a video game was espn 2k4.... take doug flutie (back-up qb for the charger, used to play in the cfl) make him do something stupid, then the next play comeone calls from the stands (HEY DOUG, GO BACK TO THE CFL) LMAO!!!

Problem is that Sega's college football games have been pretty bad (and certainly worse than EA's)...

And, if I'm not mistaken, they already have the soccer and nascar rights.

Alright, I'm done with PT for the day and here are my comments of hate. The ESPN name early on in their ventures into video game marketing originally sucked ass. The games were piss poor and it quickly faded away. Sega/VC have brought the name back into the spotlight creating a fantastic football game. They have also provided the best NHL and NBA game on the market, under the same moniker. After EA purchased their NFL monopoly, ESPN thought to themselves, oh crap... the biggest moneymaker is gone. Now what? EA then decides to go after the NBA for exclusivity. Unfortunately for them, the NBA realized that EA didnt put out a superior product as well as probably wern't offerend enough money and they wouldnt 'play ball'. So, whats the next smart move for them? EA recognized that the name ESPN is now beloved by a whole legion of fans, as well as the most recognizable brand name in sports broadcasting. So they went after ESPN's license and in their weak state ESPN caved and went along with it.

Do not be surprised if EA's sports offerings for the upcoming year are under the ESPN moniker in some way ("ESPN's MADDEN NFL").

Again, I reiterate... BOYCOTT EVERYTHING EA! :|

I'm pretty much with you, Modeps. This is atrocious.

I'm actually more pissed at the NFL for doing this than EA. The NFL should understand that the more licensing opportunities out there, the more exposure the Game gets. As such, regardless of licensing fees, I'm surprised that the NFL would engage in such anti-competitive behavior. It seems counter-productive.

Imagine my surprise reading this on IGN when I just got home tonight. Holy sh!t!!! This is huge, but not really in a good way. While I've always been a Madden lover, EA is being a little bitch and quickly getting rid of any competition in it's sports genre.

Will be interesting what they do with it. Will they finally drop Madden and brand it ESPN? Or like modeps suggested, ESPN's Madden NFL? Although I wished for a FOX presentation, this will definitely improve the presentation of Madden beyond what it's seen in past years, although now the point is moot with no competition.

so the other companies can release their games with fictional teams and player.
but provide an easy way to change names and logos.
would this work?

don't forget however that it was the NFL that started this. They sent out word that they would basically be auctioning off their licensing rights. What was EA supposed to do? Let a smaller company with more to gain outbid them on their largest moneymaker?
