DICE Canada Closed [October 04, 2006, 09:15 am ET] - 17 Comments
Following the completion of EA's acquisition of DICE (story) comes word from DICE Canada that their offices have been closed:

On the morning of Oct 2nd hours after EA finalized the buyout of DICE, it closed the Canadian subsidiary DICE Canada (Developers of BF: Vietnam and BF2: Special forces). There where 28 employees at the Canadian office.

Got this off of www.bluesnews.com.

First, it's buying an exclusive NFL license to snuff out competiton in the football genre, next we get ads placed all throughout every beloved franchise they've acquired, and finally they forcibly buy out a company with a great idea and most likely will outsource it overseas to raise profits.

Are there no lows EA won't go to?! I used to be able to convince myself that it was ok to pick up BF2 or a NFS series game every now and then, but I just can't do it anymore. I expect them to start using Starforce copy protection in the near future to complete the ring of hate towards them from the gaming community.

Great, if they're the devil, I now know how and to whom I should sell my soul to.

I hate em too, but didn't the NFL go to EA with the exclusive license when Sega started selling games for 20 bucks?

Considering both of the games are complete trash, I don't care.

Waaah. A business is looking to maximize profits so let's cry and call them the devil.

Don't like it, don't buy it. A

Additionally, take your bitching/whining to MySpace.

Yeah yeah, EA is evil blah blah. Heard it all before, just replace "EA" with "Microsoft," "Wal-Mart," "McDonalds," and myriad others. If you don't like them, don't buy their games. Simple as that. As for myself, well I love most of the Need for Speed series, NFL games are great fun (although I only buy one per 3 years or so) and the new Command and Conquer game looks sweeeeet. Everyone whines about EA these days but let's face it, although they pump out the odd sub-par title, most of their games are pretty damn good. It's not often you see a racing title (or any game for that matter) as well polished as NFS: Most Wanted. The Sims series (especially number 2) is amazing if you're into those sorts of games, they are well polished, relatively bug-free and most importantly they are fun.

Whine all you want, I'll stop buying EA titles as soon as they stop releasing fun games.

people have legitimate reasons to hate EA. EA buys up every developer they can get their greedy hands on, and then kills the company and any game they were working on. I could post a list 2 pages long with GOOD games that won't see any more sequals because of EA. Fvck EA, I don't care if they release some fun games, I hate them for killing off System Shock, just one of many fvck up's EA has done.

Only EA game in recent memory I can say I honestly liked was Battle For Middle Earth II, first one rocked also.

They are doing what is best for the company. If you want to hate someone, hate the companies that sell out to EA. No one forced a gun down their throats and made them sell their companies.

Have you ever heard of a thing called strong arming? "sell us your company or we'll spend millions to force you out of business" EA does this when they sense real competition, something they can't handle. Their past has proven they don't want to build up, they want to tear down.

Don't believe me? Why did they buy the exclusive rights to NFL games. Because Sega Sports was gearing up to finally give EA a good ass-kicking. I suspect they will buy out the NBA rights next. Oh joy! NBA Live 07 is the biggest peice of crap I've ever played.

I'm sure a lot of companies willingly sold themselves to EA, but I know there are many who had no choice. You can't compete against EA unless you're maybe Eidos or Activision. I hold EA directly responsable for me never getting a new Legends Of Kyrandia game, fvck them.

*shrug*

EA may make terrible games, but at least they're experts in making their games have top-of-the-line graphical features. Microsoft may make crappy OS's, but they do make some damn good games.

Silver lining?

DICE is not that good of a dev house. IMHO it was never very impressive. They made 1 groundbreaking idea, BF1942 and have milked that cash cow by using the same idea and to an extent even the same grpahical engine and interface(BF Vietnam) to create buggier and buggier BF games(remember how unfinished BF2 was at launch? Wheres QC? Why did people's pcs crash searching for games?)
