I had a similar situation. I used one of these:

Apparently they are code approved to create splices in Romex without a junction box. There should be plenty of slack for you to get that in there.

In my case, it was 14AWG Romex (15A circuit). If it was 12AWG Romex (20A circuit) I think I would have done junction boxes. These are approved for 12AWG but I read some things online that would make me think twice.
