My 6 year old WeedEater electric weed eater that I purchased from Wal-Mart for $40 (IIRC) still runs like a champ. It's almost time to start using it on my small lawn again. When it croaks I'll buy another one.

The larger corded electrics are fine if you have a nice lawn and trim it religiously. But if you have weeds, johnson grass, etc... or let it get tall, then electrics will bog, bind up, and generally be useless. There is also the issue of the cord if you have a big yard. Don't even bother with small electrics and cordless ones unless you've got a tiny yard like an apartment patio yard.

Electrics suck unless you're doing very small trimming projects like along a walkway or fence line. Tough jobs like thick grass, heavy weeds or brush using an electric is like trying to get it done with a pair of scissors. If you've got a big area to cover or nasty patches of heavy stuff, pop a little more and get a decent gas model. It will be money well spent.

Well, as I said... my yard is tiny. The only thing I will be cutting is grass, and not tall, thick grass...

I guess I will look around for a used Stihl or Echo, and if I can't find any for under $100, I will go with an electric one.

I've got a POS B&D electric trimmer that's over 10 yrs ols. Still works as well as it did when it was brand new.. Not very well...BUT, it does get the job done. While I agree that the gas-powered ones work FAR better, since you have a small area to maintain, an electric should do fine for ya, at 20% (or less) the cost of a crappy gas-powered unit, or 15-10% of one of the better ones..

I've had an electric for two years, and yeah, for small stuff, it's fine. I would definitely buy a pair of those blades to use instead of the plastic line, though. Much better.

If your lawn is small, just get an electric one. I have one for like 15 years and counting now...

I have a crafstmans electric weed whacker.

No cord needed - it uses a rechargeable battery. You just hang it up on the charger when you're done. I've never had it run out while using it. Its not that heavy and balances pretty well too.
