electric field and health problem

Hi, my parents are in the process of buying a new condo. The place looks great and all, but outside the balcony is a power pole with a transformer type of thing attached to the top. The distance from the "transform" to the balcony is about <40ft away, and it is leveled with the balcony. So i am wondering, in this situation, will this power "transformer?" somehow have a negative effect on the health of me and my family?

I personally would err on the side of caution and not move there...

Besides, those transformers are designed to be up on poles, right? So isn't it possible the better shielding is going to be on the bottom? If you're straight across from it....

Even if it's not a health issue, it's perceived as one by enough people that it's almost certainly going to affect the resale value of the unit.

The power lines that have been debated are the 100,000+ volt lines that distribute electricity throughout the country - and these go into major substations.

That transformer outside of your house is stepping down voltage that are ***MUCH*** lower, probably 440 down to 220. These are safe. No worries about those.

Is it close enought to hear the buzz? I wouldn't get it for the poor view. I don't think its a health problem, since it is probably transforming 14kV down to 220VAC. The 100kV high tension lines are another story. I had a friend who had one of these pass across his front yard. We could hold up flourescent lights at night under these and they would light up. Bad Buzz!

It will have a negative effect on your health if any heavy winds knock that sucker over into your livingroom and it explodes.

rule of thumb, if you can light up floourescent lights from it, dont sleep next to it
