Electric blanket not working

i've used the same Sunbeam electric blanket for a couple of years.

yesterday nite when i went to turn it on, there was static shock on the controller.

now the controller wont stay on. When i press the switch to the 'On' position, it goes back to the off position.

I was thinking of just using duct tape to keep it on.

but Is there a real way to fix this?

My electric mattress pad isnt working either. But its several years old so I am no displeased. Its been good to me for a long time.
Will get a new one.

We used to use electric blankets...until one caught on fire in the middle of the night. Less than 2 years old, still under warranty, the fire started at or by the plug. No more electric blankets for us.

(I was sound asleep...and dreamed that my feet were on fire. I woke up to see a tiny "poof" as the blanket started burning.)

screw electric blankets. I'll never use one. After so many house fires caused by the things, I don't trust the product concept.

Regular heavy-duty blankets have been the only thing I ever had growing up, and it's all I still use. Blankets, sweatshirts and pajama pants. That's my winter gear when lounging at home.

I use a Whitney point blanket that I got at the thrift shop. It's a "knock off" of a Hudson Bay point blanket, but even as a knock off, they're about $200 new. I paid $17 :^)

Gawd, I wish I could find a deal like that. Hudson Bay 8 point blankets for King size beds are $350+

Also, read some of the research on the electric blanket fires - it appears that the older style controllers were more prone to fires. But, on top of that, as they age, they become more prone to fires. i.e. every time you're using them, those wires are being bent slightly. Eventually, those wires start to break inside. It's best to replace them after a few years... they're cheap enough, why take a chance.
(And, replace it with an electric mattress pad. Heat rises - turn that pad on 20 minutes before you go to bed & it'll be comfy all night long.

Electric blankets aren't very reliable. They go out pretty often, I'd just buy a new one because it's no use risking waking up in the middle of the night to find the blanket on top of you on fire.

Wouldn't buy one. Wool blanket, down comforter, flannel sheets and jammies, wool socks, etc. Not all at once...but pick and choose to keep warm.

The woman folk tend to be radiators. Those are good too.

Get rid of it before you get hurt or worse. Not to mention the extra cost on your electric bills. Buy a nice quilt comforter and if need be, a blanket, for your bed. Top sheet, blanket, quilt. Nice and cozy.

Actually, by using an electric blanket, you can usually keep the bedroom several degrees cooler. Since you would typically only use an electric blanket during the heating season, none of the energy is really wasted. It actually results in delivering that energy to a smaller amount of space - where you're going to be sleeping. With an electric mattress pad, you can easily keep a bedroom at 40 degrees & be extremely comfortable all night long. I'm not suggesting that you go to that extreme, but hopefully that makes you realize how much you can cut back on heating costs by not heating those bedrooms quite as much.

And, I don't care what kind of wool blanket you have - unless you're Ward or June Cleaver & sleep in flannel pajamas, rather than underwear like (I'm guessing the majority of people), nothing sucks more than climbing into a 60 degree bed.*


*edit: except climbing into a 55 degree bed. Or a 50 degree bed...

The people crying about costs clearly dont pay their own bills or dont pay attention to them. Gas goes up in the winter, electricity goes down. And heating the whole house 5 degrees is much more expensive than heating only your bed 20 degrees.

Walmart has electric blankets on t3h cheaps, and the mattress pad one costs the same as the blanket. A few posts in this thread have me curious about how well the pads ones work. I turn my electric blanket on about 30 minutes before I get into bed. Climbing into a bed that's already warm is win.

China Silks also makes nice stuff, more long underwear than pajamas.

I got a (Perfect Fit?) Micro-fleece queen size low voltage electric blanket from Costco for about $85 shipped early November.
The same blanket was being sold on Amazon for about $170-200.

Works just fine for me.

I just got a nice electric pad from Amazon. Same price as BB&B with the 20% off coupon. Tested it just sitting on the bed, it works awesome.
Tossing the old one, which served me well for 5 years.
