Apparently Sonia "Gandhi" (No relation to Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, the Mahatma) led her party to victory with 220 of the 543 seats in the allied government.

Someone's got to make a rule as early as possible saying only Natural Indians can occupy the highest position in the country. Times like these make me wonder whether democracy is the way to go at all...
 
And she was a waitress originally... who just happened to run across Rajiv Gandhi (who later became a prime minister of India). Initially, she even refused to take up Indian citizenship, then refused to give up Italian citizenship until it became an inconvenience for Rajiv Gandhi. This is the worst thing that happened to India since Nehru selfishly stood for the elections.

I hate the media for not clarifying that she is not related to the great Mahatma. I wish they'd done that before the elections. :frown:

The only real statesman since independence India's ever had was Vajpyee... He was the only man who bravely went ahead with reforms. Now, we've lost him because of the ignorant rural Indian population. Now that he's gone, I wonder if India'll keeep up the high growth rate at all.
 
So Sonia Gandhi is an Indian born in Italy, hmm interesting. What is wrong with her view though? I personally don't think India and Pakistan will ever go to war again. Those two countries have a lot to lose, more loss for Pakistan than India, but I'm aware of the fact that the Pakistanis have a lethal army, although the Indians have better resources.

PS. I guess Benazir Bhutto falls in the Sonia Gandhi league?
 
War is not the point here at all. Nuclear weapons aren't the issue either. The primary issue is economic developement. What we were able to do the past few years is work on a few new productive policies. Sonia is not knowledgeable in these... Neither does she have any experience in management. But even if she had, all these things, the fact that the only reason she is in the party and so acceptable is because she was the wife of the member of the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty, and worse still, she once refused to accept indian citizenship just make her unfit for the job.
 
She's leader of the Congress party, not leader of the government. No way her coalition will survive with her as the PM. They'll pick someone a bit older, with more experience, from another party in the coalition.

No, she's an Italian born in Italy (i.e. White/Mediterranean, not Indo Aryan.) Therein lies the "problem".
 
I for one am very suprised by the results of this election. However I think this is the power of Indian youth at dispaly. I think they were ticked at the riots in Gujrat and wanted him out becuase of that. Plus the youth appeal of Congress is too much to bear (read priyanka and rahul).

I dont know if that is true... Unlike western nations, wealthy people in India tend not to vote too much. Only the old and the rural people vote. True, the Gujrat riots were bad for the BJP. While that was probably a contributing factor, I dont know if it was so profound that it would be an initiator.

Besides, a lot of the educated youth in urban areas dislike Sonia acccording to some polls. I dont know to what extent this is true though

When you have two developing countries playing chicken with nuclear bombs, nuclear weapons are the issue for me.
 
I thought it was nice to see the BJP facists lose power. The economy was good... but the intolerance was sickening 🙁
 
As numerous websites point out, while the economy was improving, the wealth was not trickling down at all. Given the large % of impoverished people, I am glad they decided to act and take a stand against him. This sets a precedent for India's future Prime ministers. Either appease the common man, or face being booted. It's about time.

Regarding Sonia's origins, it does not matter, heck we dont even know for sure if she will be the next prime minister. She is meeting with her cabinet on Saturday to decide that. What matters is that the party knows how they won and why they won and look towards future peace initiatives and quelling the religious problems that was destroying India's secular origins under the BJP and its firebrand "Hindutva" agenda. Fvck that. Let there be peace withing the muslims, christians and sikh minorities and the hindu's as well. Let there be no controlling of religion and let us work together to move india forward.

You just seem bitter that she won. This information was publically available to the voters, and yet they still voted for her, right? So what's the big deal?

It's better than the alternatives. If, as you seem to imply, some voters voted for her not knowing these obvious (I would think obvious, if you lived in India) facts, then I can see where you are given pause with democracy. I've long thought that one of the problems with it is that a person who's studied a lot of issues and really takes them to heart has no more of a say than some asswad who, for instance, votes democrat because they simply hate republicans, and it doesn't matter who they're really voting for.

BTW I know nothing about the issue and only read your two posts on it 🙂

Well you really should do some reading.. India has not been the aggressor in any conflict it has been involved and for me that is saying a lot..
 
Sounds good to me that the BJP lost, and many the Indians I know are ecstatic as well. Vajpyee is just a moderate secular face on an otherwise violent, intolerant and fanatical Hindu party. His deputy PM is responsible for flaming religious intolerance which sparked riots which mostly ended up killing mostly the poor. The BJP did well to boost the economy for the wealthy and a burgeoning middle class, but paid no attention to the poor masses, so was thrown out of office by them. If anything I think this is a vindication for democracy, as the most defenseless can still have a powerful voice. The irony is that Vajpyee called for early elections bc is thought he would cruise to an easy victory. Ha HA Hah!

The have been stories how they rigged cricket games for the Indian team to win over the beloved patriot's recently, as well as other manuevers to try and secure the votes for themselves.

Yeah, and the Communists and Socialists coming together into power and halting divestment to retain industries under Government control and implementing anti-capitalist policies is the way to go. Could you possibly be less aware of the ground realities in India?

Yeah, the BJP has its share of nutjobs, but compared to the Christian, Islamic and Jewish fundamentalists of the world, they are far less effective in their brand of violence, leave alone the fact that you obviously cannot distinguish between the larger Sangh Parivar, it's communal elements and the purely political Bhartiya Janata Party.

The "most defenseless" were offered empty promises of free water, free electricity, free food, free clothing - where the heck is this going to come from? Did you see the NSE tank today? Do you know how many 100s of crores of rupees have been sucked out of the investment market in one fell swoop because of the highly unstable Communist-Socialist combo that is coming into power? Do you know that the semi-literate masses voted in a Lok Sabha election based on local issues?

Yes, agriculture and labor-oriented industries were ignored in favour of the high tech service industry. But the service industry fetched India millions of dollars and was the only sector that ever showed amazing growth. The Congress and the two communist parties of India are going to undo all of this. This was a vote against progress.

Aw heck, who cares anyway - probably makes my own job more secure in the U.S...

I know a lot about the conflict. I don't care who the agressor is, they're both culpable. If the world is destroyed because India and Pakistan bomb us into nuclear winter, do you care who the fvck started it?

It's the posturing I can't stand. While the rest of the world (minus North Korea) has been trying to downlplay the possibilities of a nuclear war, India and Pakistan have been threatening each other with the bombs.

I think that is an issue for everyone. And it is not just confined to developing nations. Any (and every) nation in possession of nuclear weapons is a big issue, no doubt.

As far as BJP is concerned, they have a reputation of being the big bad. And there is a reason for that... Their parent organization, the RSS is not so secular. But they have matured a lot. They have broken away from the hinduvita agenda, at least since they came to power in 1998. And certainly not worse than Indra Gandhi's policies during the Emergency.

If u look @ Sonia, she refused to allow Indian Security guards to guard her even when her husband was India's PM. Always trusted Italian security guards. If she was completely Indian, what the hell business did she have with her Italian brother-in-law ordering for armored cars? And deals for money transfers were made with Italians alone, compromising India's security. While these are issues, the primary problem is that a Naturalized citizen is about to become the PM of India. I dont like that.

What u say is true, again. That is precisely the reason y India proposed linking the NPT and the CTBT to global nuclear disarmament. USA opposed it. With such vehemental and agressive opposition, India was left with no choice but to pull out of both treaties.

I think I speak for all Indians when I say... if America can have a nuclear weapon, so can we. And if anyone disagrees, they can go fvck themselves.

But this is not a topic on international nuclear posturing. It is not about international politics. It is about internal developement issues India is facing right now. And atomic weapons are not relevant to this topic.

Dont forget that these very communist/ socialist parties opposed the Cong. (I) for 50 + years for their policies. Now all of a sudden under the false garbof "Secularism" they have come together.. a gang of @#@$@&$^ thugs and good-for-nithing goons.

Be prepared ofr another election in an year or so.
