I don't want to make it any easier for people to vote. I only want people voting who have a shred of motivation to go out and do it. The people who would only vote if they could do it online are the same ones who get all their information online and consider themselves "informed". In my mind, they aren't qualified anyway.
Our voting system is archaic in some ways, but that's exactly what protects the system from massive fraud.
If you've never voted, here's how it works (at least in my town). You go to your assigned voting place, which depends on the town, ward, and district you live in. Each district comprises about 400-600 people. When you report, there is a representative from each of the Republican and Democratic parties there. You give your name and address, and they pull a card from a file box that you sign. They match your signature against the master record in a large binder. Then you go into the voting booth.
The people who are handling the file cards generally know a lot of the people coming to vote because their district doesn't include thousands of people. Having reps from each party there keeps both sides honest.
All these factors help to prevent widespread fraud.
