I live in the NY metro area and in the last year or so I've been seeing significant hype from all sorts of media to get out and vote - radio, booths at school, tv, etc...but one thing that I was thinking about to help improve our voting turnout, is the possibility of voting via the internet. I suppose for now it still is an iffy subject, but I think something like this would undoubtedly increase the voting percentage. But there are few concerns I think would follow suit with such an attempt:

1)Is supporting an undertaking like this even feasible (Bandwidth, security, etc...)
2)Wouldn't security be an issue (as far as everyone and their mother trying to hack into the site and alter results)


Possibly in the near future this could happen? What do you guys think?

Look at the problems already exhibited with Diebold in its computerized voting system.

probably not more likely, because as of now its unlikely that i wouldnt vote... besides, that, i can vote at a church about 1 mile from my house... so its pretty convenient anyways...
 
true, but the fact that you could vote online (even from work, school, anywhere you can login vi the net I suppose), wouldn't that increase the % significantly? People wouldn't even have to get up from their chair to vote....

1) It's better that it takes some effort to vote because it means that the people who vote at least care a little bit about it and have possibly made an effort to research the candidates.

2) The security issues are a nightmare. I guarantee that any presidential election decided through online voting would have the paper receipts (there would have to be paper receipts) recounted.

Okay, in a perfect world, I would say yes. I wasn't taking into account the potential for fraud and all that other stuff.
 
Since I will vote for this election, it won't affect me. But I might be slightly more inclined to vote for those local elections that have no impact what-so-ever on me.

But if the security issues could be eliminated, I think it is fine to have internet voting. Of course, since security isssues will always be there, it isn't a good path to go down.

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion..." Sorry that bugs me...

But no, nooooo voting on the internet, way too many issues with security and fraud, etc, etc. So... no.
 
Computerized voting is a real problem. We are nowhere near where we need to be as far as security. Just think of the possibilities. I also think any voting software NEEDS to be open source if it is to have any credibility, there should also be a way for people to go back later and check their votes to make sure they havent been reversed.

because the church building is being used as a place to vote?
you guys really need to re-think your stance if you think there's an issue with voting inside of a building.. its a building...
the church has volunteered their staff, their building, and their time to encourage people to vote, and this is the kind of response? just like any other voting venue, there is no campaigning or any of the sort allowed within a certain distance from the building.. the volunteers are allowed to make no mention of any names or parties...
some of you people try and take the seperation of church & state thing too far...
 
I would be concerned with security/hacker problems and the potential for tampering with the results. I don't think online voting is a good idea.

Come on, how difficult is it to stop by your polling place and punch a hole in a piece of paper anyway?

My polling place is about a 2 minute walk from my house or 1 block by car. I usually just stop by on my way home from work.
 
Voting on-line is a bad idea. The vote counts would no longer be credible because you don't know who really is behind that monitor.

unless they have special computers where they monitor who enters to vote, or something of that nature

Get off your butt and go to the polls!

I can not stand someone that complains about the out come
that did not take the time and go and vote for themselves

Once I state that, they usually shut right up 😀
 
If online voting was setup, yes I would do it, and so would many others for convinence.

Do I think online voting should be implemented? No.

However, a modern computer-assisted voting system should be implemented, one that generates a paper trail which can be reconciled. I think something along the lines of a checks and balances system. Something where you vote online (maybe not at home), print out a reciept with your personal information, while an anonymous reciept is printed out back-end at the polls. You would then be required to reconcile your reciept with the polls, (maybe via a bar code on the reciept) in order for the vote to count. We still need to use paper, but we need to leverage technology to improve things.

EDIT: just imagine how things would be sped up in crodwed areas, you vote online, print out a reciept, then walk to the polls, verify you are a registered voter, walk into a booth, scan your reciept, and see that everything checks out, hit OK, and go. This could allow for recounts by calling out voters to bring their reciepts in again in a worst-case scenario, this can't be done today.
