I highly doubt there's a lock that would work on a DVD disk.

I mean, DVDs contain data, it's not like a mechanical device that blacks out a section of a disk until you read another section.

See, that's why I always rip a DVD to HD before I watch it. DVD Decrypter defeats all the must watch segments.

Or you can rip the DVD to HD, backup just the movie to DVD, then play it on your regular HT.

I discovered when I tried to watch FarScape: The PeaceKeeper Wars that the disc would not even play on my DVD-ROM drive, the only DVD player I have hooked up at the moment. My regular player is in the basement with some other electronics I am not using at the moment.

I had to rip it using DVD Decrypter just to watch it.

Didn't even have to hack mine, it has a hidden menu you access which allows you to turn off MacroVision and all of the other nastiness.

I think they should be required to put the number of ads and trailers on the outside of the cd so people can decide if the DVD is worth the purchase.

Not technically, no. But my dad has had the same problem with some new DVD's. There are previews and junk that you can NOT skip when you put the disc in.

WMP10 + nvDVD does just fine, actually.

Well sure I can if I don't mind lowering the bitrate to fit it on a 4.7GB disc, or better yet, pay through the nose to buy dual-layer media to get full quality. Here's to wishing set-top hard disc recorders were networked and could play DVDs back from an ISO image file.

MOST standard dvd players won't let you skip, blame the movie industries that enforce this , not the players.

Exactly my point. There will always exist players that do not deliberitaly implement protection schemes. So, people shouldn't buy the ones that do.

What I've been given to understand is that DVD players sold in the US cannot be sold without the UOP feature by law. (Or possibly by DVD consortium lockout)

As far as software goes, a lot of it depends on the DVD decoder you're using. You can send the "root menu" command all you want, but if your DVD decoder won't process it you're SOL.
