Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

Why all the high ratings and praise? IMO, this game sucks.

Sure it's huge, expansive, and open... But the game lacks a certain fun factor and personality. People gawk over its lush environment and huge world, but everything is boring and uninspired IMO.

I tried playing it for several hours. Ran around and tried doing the main quest and did a few side quests (yes, I was successful in completing the required tasks), but I just don't find it fun.

I want to like this game because of its critical acclaim and large following. Can someone help me to play this game?

I don't know what you're doing wrong. I played it 30 hours in the first two days I had it. I then gave it away before it destroyed my life. I'm also staying away from WoW.

No one can help you play the game if you don't like it. I found it very entertaining to follow the storyline and plot. I've now amused myself with completing some of the many other tasks. I dunno.

what video game DO you like?

RPG's in recent memory that I've enjoyed playing include WoW & FFXII.
I enjoy Madden 07, NBA 2K7, GoW, Halo 2.
Hell, I still play Warcraft 3 from time to time.

I've had the game for a little over a month and I LOVE IT. I've played 52 hours so far, and barely scratched the main quest.

RPGs like Oblivion aren't always everyone cups of tea...the same way that turn-based RPGs aren't...the same way third-person shooters aren't...the same way sim games aren't...the same way fighting games aren't...and on and on and on.

I agree with you. I was very excited to get it after everything I had been reading. Once I got it all up and running though I got bored very quickly and sold it one week later.

 to this armour-plated, medieval turd.

True, however, typically when a game is met with such acclaim, I haven't had a problem with not liking it.

I like it because it's like an MMORPG without the second M or the O. I don't like interacting with other real people, that's why I play video games in the first place.

Tastes differ. Oblivion is an excellent game if you like its style of play, just like Morrowind.

I played a couple of hours of GTA3 and wasn't impressed.

I prefer turn-based strategy to real-time, so have never played Starcraft and am in no hurry to.

I find sports games boring.

Coke. Bruce Lee. Neo. Rock salt.

I don't like it either. there's no direction, no sense of happening. you basically do whatever you feel like doing which seem totally pointless in the grand scheme of things, but that's precisely why some like it. to each his own I guess.

Interesting, I play video games to have fun/compete with others or get engrossed in an enthralling storyline.

To each his own, I just wanted to see what people really liked about this game, and I can't seem to find it, but I'm over it... So whatever..

I think it's a great game. I put a little over 30 hours into it and just stopped. It's still installed on my machine, but I don't want to get started on it again, as I have other games to play that wont eat all my time.

It's all about escapism. Don't get me wrong... I like to DM some firends in Quake or another shooter... but for the most part, I really don't want to play multi. I get the escapist sense in Oblivion or Morrowind, as well as excellent shooters like HL2 or FEAR.

Oblivion+100000 mods>*

Ok, well not really.
But it's pretty dam good.

(and not really 100000 mods. There's really only about 100 good ones (if that))

Ok, I definitely know where the OP is coming from.

I am not an RPG gamer myself, but I picked it up anyway because of the critical acclaim and it was on a bargain. It seemed to be boring in the beginning but I'm still trying to enjoy it so I'm continuing to play it. The quest seems interesting, the spells do to... but there is just so much of travelling here and there to get things done.

I guess if you are looking for instant gratification like in an FPS or RTS, then this game isn't for you. But if you try to be patient and pick at it, you will find yourself enjoying it.

See, I happen to dislike WoW quite a bit, and can't really see why others might like it. Different strokes for different folks. That's all it is.
