Ek Gads! Help - maybe screwed up clients dell!

Hello all -

A client of mine uses a dell inspiron 8600 laptop, and I, being the nice helpful brilliant computer wiz that I am, backed up all their documents, and formated the beast to set it up - "better" at their request. Ran into a small problem, with the drivers.

The ethernet controller, multimedia audio controller, netowrk controller, pci modem, and video controller, are all giving me the infamous yellow questionmark in the device manager. I don't know exactly what the devices are, and I can't even get the notebook online!

Any ideas?

Can't you download* the network drivers from dell?

Once you get those up and running, you should be golden. For future use, reformating is not a valid way to streamline a machine. 😉 🙂

Edit: *Download and put on a CD or floppy if the driver fits(I assume it would) on another machine.

Put the service tag which you will find on a label at the bottom of the laptop into the box in this link and it should tell you the original configuration of the laptop.

Did the client's notebook come with reinstallation media for the operating system? If so, you should be using that to reinstall the operating system -- for two reasons:

1. That OEM image of the operating system will contain the appropriate drivers for the hardware on the system.

2. That OEM image goes with the license that Dell sold with that machine. Unless you actually went out and purchased a separate copy of Windows specifically for use on this notebook, then you may be installing from media that is tied to an operating system installation which resides on another machine.

Using the installation media that came with that Inspiron will solve two problems for you.

If you are using a retail copy of the OS that you purchased for this Inspiron then you could use one of the many utilities which are designed to detect and enumerate the hardware on a computer. Look for something along the lines of Belarc Advisor, Everest (Home), UnknownDevices or one of the other such utilities.

And, next time you do this, rememeber to go into Device Manager and make note of the devices BEFORE you format. 😉

Good luck!

Exactly...look for a blue "Resource CD" that came with the laptop. It will have all the drivers for all the hardware.

I agree with the tag# suggestion. You'll get the latest version of the drivers for whatever was installed on that particular model. Not that big a deal..don't feel too bad. 🙂

^^^

What he said..... just go to another pc with internet access, go to dells website, enter the service tag, download and burn the drivers. Problem solved.
