Ejection mitigation systems mandated...

I have no problem with mandatory safety equipment. The only issue is people on the low end of the scale that will have more trouble affording a new car.

The amount of people ejected from a car while wearing a seat belt is so low on anything that isn't a jacked up truck or suv that this is a huge waste of money.

Passenger vehicles will have to keep occupants, even those not wearing seatbelts, from going through the side windows during a rollover...

Why on earth do we keep trying to protect people who are too damn stupid to wear a seat belt? Didn't we learn this lesson with regular airbags when we had the big switchover to "second generation" airbags because the first-generation airbags were hurting people who were wearing seat belts?

ZV

Put in a 5-point harness and problem solved. Probably cheaper too.

I didn't see anything about no seatbelts in that article, but if you're too stupid to wear a seat belt, I don't think you deserve to breed.

The "no seatbelt" part is in the very first sentence...

How many people get ejected while wearing a seatbelt?

I like the 5 point harness too... In my drag car it sure made you feel alot safer... The reg seat belt w/shoulder harness cars use now tend to really cause injurys but of course are better than nothing and for sure better than just a lap belt like in pre 70 stuff... The idea of air bags is really good but the cost is quite a bit more than a good set of belts... But of course the average consumer would go banana`s trying to get a 5 point harness buckled up so they could run down to the store...😵

I've thought this also. Cars should have five point harnesses. I've also thought helmets should be mandatory in a vehicle, regardless of messing up hair.

I'm just trying to imagine a woman in a skirt trying to put on a fire point harness. Actually, sounds pretty hot.

Well, apparently it's illegal to wear a helmet in a car in many locations. There are stories on the interwebz about motorcycle riders who decided to pop on their helmet in the car, and got pulled over, then cited for some safety violation. Something something blocks your view; guess bikers should stop wearing them.

Not going to lie, I sometimes go without a seatbelt in the work car. The only reason I do is because I know I'm stopping and getting out in less than a kilometre; I've since forced myself to put it on no matter how short the distance. If there were a 5-pointer in there, I'll probably leave it off.

The government and the enviro wackos hate other people driving cars, so they intend to mandate so many stupid and expensive things that people just won't be able to afford them.

When does this end? Gov't needs to knock it off already with retarded mandates that just drive the cost up for people. Idiots. If people are too stupid to put on their seatbelts it is their own dumb fault, stop trying to protect people from their own stupidity all the time.

"When fully implemented, we believe this standard will prevent on average 373 fatalities and 476 serious injuries every year."

This is the government justifying its existence. These are minuscule statistics.

yep, compared to ~15,000 deaths/year from most likely people driving like morons.

even at just $100 per car, that's nearly $1.2 million per person. and that's if volumes are 10 million cars sold (iow, very low). wtf.
