Prolog: This weekend I formated and re-installed XP and updated with SP1, ect, ect.

Ok I downloaded a rather large file ylast night with Imesh(*type of file will remain unnamed) and this morning I got up, turned on my monitor and logged into Windows. Imesh said the file was downloaded and so I opened up the download directory and the file wasn't in the directory. I checked the trash and when it wasn't there I searched my computer and it wasn't anywhere to be found. The download directory said it was last modified at 5:00-ish am. I checked my router log and it didn't have anything strange logged at that time. This afternoon I download another big file from my CompSci department (VS7 cd2, my cds got dirty)so I could do my homework and when I check my desktop for it, it was missing as well. WTF is going on?

Do a windows search for all files and arrange it by date modified and search for files recently edited. Maybe you misplaced them?
Did you lose the space from those big files or did you gain it all back?

I don't know if I fully understand your problem, but also go into Folder Options, and make sure that it's showing "All Hidden Files and Folders." I dunno if that'll help any. Cuz your still having that problem on the Desktop.

they give away VS? I still had to buy it (of course at a 90% discount), but it still wasn't free... if that's what his school does, then I take everything back.

Run System Restore from Control Panel. Install Zone Alarm (it's free) and Norton's virus scan.

I agree. Try runing system restore from system properties in the program folder. It's pretty effective ...sometimes.

Use Symantec's online virus scanner (it's free)

Enable the XP Firewall, then check for suspicious programs starting upon boot (start-->run, type msconfig, check the last tab). If you're unsure of something, type it's name into google (ie, if you see nwiz.exe starting up, type that into google, nwiz.exe happens to be a nvidia program) and look for info there. Some website (annoyances.org?) maintains a HUGE list of programs and tells if it's safe to disable them or not.

Check your network traffic (I'm not 100% sure how to do it, but I know it's possible in XP) and see if you've sent out a lot of traffic (ie: enough traffic that would make up those files that are missing). The type of files that are dissappearing are pretty appealing to warez kiddies (even if they are legit copies of yours), so someone may have backdoored you and started helping themselves to your programs.
