OK, how about you get your head out of you rear end and think about it for a while, lets talk about today. In the past 10 - 20 years, China has not come up with anything that helped humanity in any way, except for cheap labor, well... that too has basically hurt humanity in ways but that a discussion for another day.
All china has done is reverse engineer and steal intellectual property. It has infringed several patented design by copying and then gave the middle figure to the rest of the civilized world. So you can basically take your bullshit argument and stick it up yours.
Today the rest of the civilized worlds are governed by different laws which is honorably followed by most of the countries. I understand that some countries which do not have honor or self respect will keep doing it, but that, in no way, makes it right.
If this sealing does not stop it will slow down the R&D coz of decline in investment in R&D coz organization making those investments will know that their innovations will be stolen anyways and they will never get a fair ROI. And then slowly you can move back to the cave or the whatever sh1th0le you crawled out of.

What happened Tex???
Your wife leave you for a cute Latina boy, with flawless brownskin??
Did you run out of oil????
Brazil and Australia started producing cheaper beef?
You ran out of credit?
The Pipe dreams of endless monopolies are over sucker, now pay! pay your bill fuckers!
You might as well take that 45 and end it all now!
What a greedy and sinister bunch of colonialist pommies you American's really are. Remember it was the profit greedy share holders, that created China, but still you look at the symptom instead of the cure- what you got to ask yourself is- how dumb as my arse(note the correct English word use) are you?

There are cheaper places than China for labor. Chinese labor wages have increased over 70% since 2005, so labor arbitrage isn't as much an advantage as it used to be.

Obviously you have no understanding of how a global economy/business works. It doesn't matter how cheap someone can build something for if they cannot meet the timing or demand of the purchaser.

The necessary supplier base and infrastructure (supply chain) for consumer electronics is in China and the far east. You cannot develop that in the US.

Yes, cutting out parasitic middle men that don't really do anything productive, except con people into paying above the true value of a item is something the working classes needs world wide..........both in the government sector or the private sector.
The Us needs to address Greediness and Laziness, before it can say shit about anybody else with any level of creditability.

I'm sorry, how many political prisoners are there in the US? How many countries we threatened for nominating a Nobel Prize winner?

I suggest a test. Make fun of the "god fearing people" on the internet in the US then go to China and bitch about the government. Wait, you did the first, so go to China and we'll keep a seat for you if you ever get out of prison.

I don't give a shit if the Chinese bow to Mecca or the Handbook of Chemistry and Physics. These people would kill you no sooner than look at you if it suited them, and you would have no recourse.

Which makes them different to American's in what way????

A statement is often uttered in the engineering department where I work: "I hate people."
Though I don't think we're quite to the level of "The fools! One day I'll make them all pay!":)

The grand master is the Architect!
All "engineers" are humbled by him, in his omnipotent benevolence!
He knows what they really need!

I wonder what makes you a commie apologist, your grandma and mom have been whoring for them or what? are born out of some kind of commie lust or something? whatever China does now is wrong and there is no excuse for it. We opened our market to the whole world equally and yet this one country, whose dicks your mom has been taking up her "arse" all life is the only one that is screwing us over. btw, last I checked TX was still the second largest economy of US and doing much better that the "real America" that you speak of. So just shut the fuck up and stick you head you commie whore mama's ass...

They are just a bunch of dishonorable, corput and dishonest losers. Its not only US, but everyday you can hear some kind of outrageous corupt Chinese deal going down in some part of the world, be it New Zealand, Cambodia, South Africa or India... They are the parasite of the world who are eating away the very core of our civilization as we know it.

lol like the GOP presidential circus or uber-libs like Pelosi?

I don't trust one of our political leaders...not a damn one (R or D). I don't know Chinese leadership enough though to comment on their trust except how the country behaves on a whole towards freedom and democracy (which isn't good at all). I don't know which is worse.

Since these things began in the USA, it's obviously not true that we cannot develop that in the USA, only that consumer electronics would cost more.

It's more like the industry has been transferred from the USA to the far east where it vastly took root, grew, and matured. It really makes no economic sense to even try to develop that industry again in the US under current economic and political conditions

What else would they be? It's a dictatorship, no point in placing someone who needs to understand the law.

The law in China is whatever the top head wants it to be.

That's what they'd have you believe!
If you started making stuff that obviously lasted longer, was better designed and functioned......they'd be a push over!
But you've got a class war to win first, the upper classes have been undermining the walls of the middle class for 30 years, it's time to strike back!
Go Jessie James!
Making product like this is how you win!

You've gotta ask why this is the case:

It's because in America politics is all about lobbying, marketing, and trying to trick the little people.

Yes, but they do not have a leader that won the Nobel Peace Prize only a few months into his presidency. ;)

I wonder if some universities in China offer "reverse engineering" paths for various engineering disciplines?

I look at the mainland Chinese military, I see clones of Soviet equipment.

I look at mainland Chinese consumer electronics, I see (poor) clones of Western European, American and Japanese technology.

The current system in China does not seem to encourage innovation these days...
Give them time. They were on rice pattys 30 years ago and victims a great atrocities. Korea used to live in huts and make garbage too now their cities look like most developed in the world and they are even beating Japanese in many industries.

IMO China will make US look like a third world country in 20 years even on defense products.

I think the better word is "Reverse Engineers". I have never seen anything come out of China that the world has never seen before, they just make technology cheap.

Your knowledge of history is stupendously horrendous.

Spending a couple years in Seoul, seeing the government's focus on science and engineering in their infrastructure and planning is really refreshing compared to the gridlock of lawyers and lib arts majors that control government here in the States (which I am ashamed to be a part of). It's sad to see some of the mental midgetry and lack of deep understanding of technical issues in our government debates.

On the flip side, the Chinese and Korean business culture pretty much sacrifices any qualms of business ethics for end results. Having a chance to talk with some engineers in big Korean conglomerates, my impression is that these companies are very paternalistic, the little guys take orders from the higher ups and are expected to produce by any means necessary. This includes espionage, blatant copying of IP, use of bribery and slush funds, etc. One engineer told me he would take international "business trips" where his sole secret purpose was to steal trade secrets.

Another interesting aspect of Chinese and Korean business mentality is their dual hatred and admiration for the Japanese. They hate the Japanese for their history of occupation and it fuels their desire to beat the Japanese conglomerates, while at the same time trying to follow the Japanese steps to success in the 60s and 70s. Korea seems at the cusp of transitioning from making copycat products into their own, while China is still lagging behind. But the speed at which they are progressing makes me think China will be leading the way in science and technology in 10-15 years.

Anyway, a bit of rambling but my $0.02.

Different countries have different "high status" degrees and backgrounds. In some Western European countries, political science is a competitive and prestigious degree. In the US, prestigious law degrees and prestigious business degrees are among the high status paths (I'm not counting University of Phoenix degrees here).

As a person with an astrophysics undergrad, 3 years of semiconductor physics research done, and who made the switch to the MBA, I can easily say I learned a lot more per unit time in my science life than I have so far in my business life. Unfortunately this isn't how society treats it.

When I say I did an astrophysics degree, most people get a glazed look on their faces and say "whoa... you must be smart." When I say I did an MBA, the impression I get is they think I'll be successful.

Now, I was working for peanuts with my physics degree and the MBA has allowed me to make a good living. While I credit the MBA for opening the door to a better career, it is the physics which will allow me to do a great job. My future success will be determined by the person that the science degree made me, much more so than anything I learned in the MBA.

Scientist != Engineer

In the grand scheme of things they are essentially the same. Most of the courses in a lot of engineering degrees are the same as in physics degrees, for the first 2 years at least. All the math is the same, engineering just focuses on specific applications.
