What should I do about this bastard hanging around my house? 8 legged freak

Whats worse is I saw a black widow on my front porch. Luckily it was getting eaten by ants (which are another story since these little bastards bite pretty bad). But the spider was black and had the tell-tale red hourglass on its underside.

Normally I see 1 inch spiders but they usually get out of the way pretty quick and I leave them alone. That big 3 inch sucker on the side of my house would not move an inch. I even tapped it with the ruler and it just sat there..... waiting.

Dude, just leave it alone. It won't hurt you. Just be glad that it is "servicing" your yard.

The spider is outside all set up to eat some bugs around your house, why not leave it be?

Yowsa! Wouldnt' want to meet up with that thing in a dark alley.

Of course if it has radioactive properties and gives me cool spider like abilities, then maybe it would be ok.

I don't know what the real name of that critter is but in the farmland we call them bean spiders. They build webs between rows of soybeans in the field. Full sized they would probably go to five or six inches "legs and all" on your ruler. They are in every field every year.

"Walking beans" is the term for strutting through the field pulling annual weeds you don't want going to seed. Picture yourself partaking in this activity. You try to do it early in the morning before it gets hot. You are soaked from the dew on the plants which are around navel high. Picture looking down and seeing this bastage parked right on your nads...he's all wet and glistening...you walked through his web.:Q

Whats even better is if others are working with you and you see one crawling up their back. "Hey...you got a bug or something on you there Steve..."

:D

Edit:I corrected the size after looking at a ruler...I am a guy...things seem bigger than they really are

pop it POP IT!

btw the hourglass is on the topside of the black widow an you probably have an infestation under your house, not too uncommon. leave it alone, it keeps flys and other bugs from invading your yard. as for ants. fsk um, theres nothing you can do.

Crap, I've got to go under the house and do some work. I think I will put it off until its below freezing outside! Plus, there is an egg sac near the big one. Maybe they will eat the black widows.

And yes it is a losing battle against the ants. If they build a nest to close to the door, I usually get them with some boiling water. Thats enough to make them move to the fringes of the yard.

Its just a garden Spider...it would hurt if it bit you, but more then likely its looking for some juicy bugs :)

We have one in our backyard...its nesting between some grape vines. Let it be...they are not poisonous (to humans anyway) and they are a REAL effective way of ridding your garden from insects. As for your black widow problem, they tend to stay in dark DAMP areas. Your not likely to see one spinning a nest in the corner of your wall. Your likely to see them in sheds, barns, under houses, wood piles, etc. Anywhere damp and with wood.

come to think of it, that spider and the black widow are competing for similar food sources...if you kill that spider, it just gives black widows a better chance of surviving. The Garden Spider will not go inside your house...if you havent noticed already, they prefer the sunshine :) unlike it's widowed brethen who would prefer the nooks and cranies of a wooden enclave. I repeat, just leave it alone...think of it as a way to help rid yourself of Black widows :) I know that when I go home to Kentucky, the farmers LOVE having these things around as it keeps all those nasty bugfs off of their crops :)

i think I saw a black widow in my basement yesterday, on the ceiling. I just saw it was black and shiny, and I was going to give it a closer inspection but I ran from the room squealing like a little schoolgirl.

I'm gonna go pump some iron and chug some beers to regain part of my masculinity

When I was in High school, my parent sent me to a private school in Idaho. For most of the year (on and off), a Black Widow lived in my bedroom window. My bed was directly under the window, and I would show them the spider. They all shook their heads a asked why I didn't kill it. I would shrug and say that I liked it there.

You guys don't mind these Black Widows being around? Aren't they dangerous if they bite you?

*Shiver* they're not too common in Southern NJ (from what I've seen anyway). More common in North Jersey, but...uhhh..not too keen on finding one.

BTW it is an Orb Weaver and completely harmless. Unless you are a fly or mosquito or other pesky bug.;)

I hate black widows. I found one in my BBQ grill(haven't used it for about a month). I also found the egg sac thingy. I opened it and there was like a hundred little spiders in there. I smashed some of them and then I got my compressed air, turned it upside down, and froze the sac. =) No more black widows anymore:D

Yes they can be dangerous, but they don't tend to enter houses so I'm not too concerned. Their bite can be lethal in the elderly and young children but generally give healthy adults some nasty flu symptoms.

I figure they're taking out a lot of the creepy crawlies that could be making it into my house before they get there. I do take them out every once in a while when I start seeing a lot of webs. I pull out the good ol' shop-vac and suck 'em up followed by a nice sized shot of raid into the nozzle :).
